They're great, but we don't see nearly as much of their universe and they don't have an overarching plot of good Vs evil. HP is an epic, WW is just really good YA/kids fiction.

It's just not the same thing.

+2

Agreed.

Why do people always feel the need to compare things that have at most the tiniest fleeting similarities (if at all) and then go "I can't fathom how this thing that is nothing like this other thing isn't just as popular". Like... you really can't think of a reason, the two things being entirely dissimilar? Not a one? Okay.

This secret gave me deja vu, and it turns out OP might be riffing off this other secret (https://fandomsecrets.dreamwidth.org/2684032.html?thread=1092708480#cmt1092708480) from a bit ago.

Either that or they're very uncreative and just happened to stumble upon the exact same form as the other anon from back then. And/or they're very uncreative and are the other anon from back then reusing their own form.

I believe they were both originally both posted in the same secrets thread.

I think it's most likely someone riffing. Though this one actually makes slightly more sense than the Adrian Mole one did.

I wrote the first one but I’ve never heard of Worst Witch.

I looked it up and ironically these came out when I was a kid.

Guess I just find magic dumb.

God, but do you never tire of being a wet blanket?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think wet blankets that know they're wet blankets do get tired of it. They know such antucs get plenty of response onlune, so if anything they'll likely lean into that.

I consumed the Worst Witch series through primary school (1991-1996) and was completely baffled when Harry Potter came and was instantly more popular. I was the epitome of shocked Pikachu face

(and the author hasn't dug her own grave by being a terf or antisemite so)

(Anonymous) 2022-10-10 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was me as well-- I get that there are differences insofar as the Worst Witch didn't have the big overarching good-vs-evil, but in terms of the school stuff, like... oh, a British school for witchcraft with a classist blond bully who gets temporarily changed into an animal at some point? Where *have* I seen that before?

This secret speaks to me personally cause at the time of watching the tv series as a child (didn't know there were books til well into adulthood) I related so strongly to how awkward and clumsy she was, I still heavily do as an adult :(

Harry Potter was an absolute publishing fluke of gigantic proportions - anything you compare to it is going to be different just because it's such an outlier (adn should not be counted).

From my own memories of growing up as a British kid in the 90s when the Harry Potter books were coming out - I remember boys got really into Harry Potter as well as the girls in my class; but none of the boys had any interest in the Worst Witch series because it was a 'girls book'.

Of course I only really over heard theses conversations at school and didn't really read either because I was obsessing over Jaqueline Wilson books at the time, but thinking on it I guess that Harry Potter just got marketed at the right time in the 90s whereas most of the Worst Witch books go back to the 70s.

*just to add, Worst Witch only came up because the tv series was airing in the 90s too so everyone was aware of its existence but yeah - once again I heard others claim it as something aimed towards girls at the time.
Harry Potter casted a big net in terms of catching a lot of interests at the time not just for kids but adults that were getting into the series too (pretty sure it was one of the first books my Mum was reading when she was trying to learn English because children books were easier for her to learn from - and I have met a lot of people who were learning English while reading the series, so its been pretty common in my experience).
