The way my family does it is this: My mom's generation is retired, and nobody expects the kids (30s-40s) to come visit using their own money. When I do go visit home, my mom almost always pays for my plane ticket, 'cause she recognizes that our generation gets paid jack shit compared to hers, and she's retired and set for the rest of her life (house paid, car paid, etc etc). Sometimes, when she wants to travel, she'll come up to visit me.

My wife's family (retired also), otoh, expect her to always come visit them, even though we live on the west coast, and they on the east. They refuse to even meet her half way (where my mom lives). They'll never come here. (Honestly, thank god, they're awful people.) She doesn't talk to them anymore.
