Re: Mock the Week is ending, lament with me.

i used to love it but i don't think i've watched any of the big three (mtw, hignfy and qi) in forever

andy parsons was painfully unfunny for too long, and (i know what's coming) the bbc's gender mandate on panel shows feels so, so forced (jo brand has three jokes and none of them are funny)

Everything on all of those shows feels forced at this point

pretty much

hignfy is 64 series deep now, and while uk politics is the gift that keeps on giving, maybe it could do with a shakeup

it's crazy that it's been going for 20 years now just since they got rid of Angus Deayton

the problem is what can you actually do to shake it up? the premise of the show at this point is purely and simply having Paul Merton and Ian Hislop. if you change them, it wouldn't be HIGNFY in any recognizable sense. if you keep them, it's going to be the same show.

Alright, but Andy Parsons hasn't been on since 2015 and Jo Brand has been on a total of six times, all in the first three seasons.

when i said forever i meant it had been an extremely long time, plausibly as long as 2015 if not longer

i understand jo brand continues to make regular appearances on qi and hignfy

I liked Andy about as much as Frankie, tbh. Which is to say: sometimes funny, mostly alright.

I also can't really agree on the gender mandate, at least not on MtW. There's so many panelists that it was always weird that some months they apparently couldn't even find one female comedian with the right connections to the production company. Which was all it was when they said they would love to have more female comedians but gosh darn, funny women are just so hard to find.

The mandate is more noticeable on smaller shows like HIGNFY but even then they have some great female panelists on the roster now which I'm glad to see more often.

the problem with andy is that his delivery is so slow that i always got to the punchline about ten minutes before he did, which is bad for comedy at the best of times but terrible for a show as fast paced as mtw

i just looked at the cast lists for the last few series of hignfy and DAMN they recycle the same few women a lot (and who the fuck cares about janet street porter in 2022)
