LOL

I'm not quite that far along.

But I do wish people would figure out how not to put any spaces before or after the html for italics, especially when they use italics a lot. It drives me up the wall. I grind my teeth when I see something like " Please ." instead of "Please."

I do wonder, though, if people who punctuate like your example either don't pay attention to how the people who punctuate correctly do it or if they think those people are doing it wrong.

AO3 has a glitch where it does that if you're copy and pasting text from Google Docs. It introduces that space when it wasn't there in the original text. This script will fix that but I don't think a lot of people know about it: https://ao3commentoftheday.tumblr.com/post/187558714490/i-write-my-fics-out-in-google-docs-and-then-paste

Oh bless, I'd been correcting it with search-and-replaces in Notepad++.

Haha...

I always have to look up the punctuation rules for dialogue and I'm STILL not convinced I got it right. Uh... so if you have a link to that page, OP... that'd be great? Thanks.

Easiest way to learn punctuation rules for dialogue:

Go to the cheapest thrift store you can find.
Go to the back where they keep the bookshelves.
Pick the crappiest, cheapest, most garbage romance book they have.
Buy it.
Go home.
Rip a page out at random.
Stick it above your writing desk.
You now have your guide to standard dialogue and punctuation rules.

na

I actually saw a pretty good tumblr post recently with the basics.

Uggghhh, yes. I've been seeing that a ton lately, not only in fic but actual published books and it's so annoying.

I feel ya, OP. That also makes me just...*hands*.

My honest to god job is fixing this for people before publication. I'm torn between wishing people were better at this and knowing that, if they were, I wouldn't have much of a job.
Also: I would like to strangle whoever thought it was a good idea to make quotation marks in many fonts look the same as a double-prime to the extent that people think they are the same thing. " ≠ “

I wish you were employed on more books, anon. I can deal with poor punctuation in fanfic (and if it's so bad that it's impacting my enjoyment I just backbutton) but I am so sick of actual published books that I paid for being full of garbage that a simple proofread would have caught.

My job involves translating those books into braille, and the quotation marks vs double-prime triggers a rage response for me because our software recognizes one but not the other, so I feel you.

I'm almost there with people using the word "touchy" to mean tactile. When someone is described as touchy, THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT MEANS. What you're looking for is "touchy-feely."

THANK YOUUUUU. I now will make a collection of people misusing words. It's incredibly annoying -- I'm not trying to shit on anyone, it's just like someone is slapping my eyeballs and my brains stutters when I see that.

Angsty when you mean antsy. Ugh. Among others.

I'm at the point now where grammar mistakes are noted but I don't care enough to feel anything beyond a little annoyed most times. Does the story engage me enough to see past it? If yes, I keep reading, if not, back button.
