I've seen this happen in many fandoms over the quarter-century I've been in online fandoms. Including plenty where the protagonist was white.

What I can tell you is that attempting to guilt-trip other fans over what they like is a sure-fire way to make your fave even more unpopular.

Also, not every protagonist is going to be likeable or interesting to everyone, whatever color they happen to be.
