Eh.

I feel like if you didn't cheat with at least one of those books, you didn't get the full experience.

Yeah the only way to read these is to have all of your fingers bookmarking 6 or 7 choices back so you can rewind easily once you die

It is called exploring all the story permutations. It is a good thing.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-11 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Who DIDN'T read all the choices and then choose the best (for them) one, lol!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-11 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't! Most of the time I just picked and accepted the outcome!

I loved those books! My favorites were one set in Stonehenge - very historically inaccurate as I got sacrificed there by druids - and another involving the Aztecs. Odd I didn't grow up to have a human sacrifice kink, really.

I used to love those too (and their competition, the Which Way books) and I was no kid when they were around, either.

I don't think it's really "cheating" if you ejoyed them and it didn't ruin the experience...I mean, the point is to have fun, right?

Oh, sure, you say that now, but take that attitude at the Official World Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Championships and you'll be laughed out of the room

There was one of those you were actually expected to cheat at: https://gizmodo.com/remember-inside-ufo-54-40-the-unwinnable-choose-your-o-1552187271/

I always played them straight a few times and then I'd get so annoyed with the weird sudden bad endings (like, the "turn left or turn right" with no further information and the wrong one drops you down a hole full of spikes and you're dead) that I'd cheat! I enjoyed the bad endings that resulted from your choices, though.

I'm not even sure how one "cheats".

I mean if I got a bad ending suddenly, I still had my finger on the page I came from, so I'd just treat it like a "save point" - since I died or whatever, reload from the place I made the poor decision.

And even then, I'd go back to the beginning several times and read them over again with different choices to get all the endings. Is... that actually not what most people did?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-12 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
No, I save-scummed cyoa books too! Though sometimes I’d look through to see if there were any endings I missed and then try to get to that one from the beginning as well.

Haha, yup! Loved these books :} Sometimes I'd just read them straight through like a regular book and try to mentally work out the 'page map' as I went along, and piece together the various stories.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-12 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
But did you use anal beads to do it? That is what we all want to know.

I would read through one path, then go back and read through the other paths.

That's not cheating, that's thoroughly exploring and enjoying the book.

Same, and same.
