Most of the characters were, you know, a bit flawed, but they had character development and emotional arcs.

Ted Mosby stayed the same emotionally stunted manchild that began the story, and by that point, it really wasn't cute.

He was enjoyable enough in the beginning, but then he never ever grew up and he became just straight up annoying in my book.

I think he got worse in later seasons because at least earlier he recognized that not everyone had the same goals as him. In later seasons he judged anyone who didn't share his goals (at least the men, with women he just assumed they'd eventually share his goals).
