What things about your fandom have been bugging you lately?

Tolkien fandom, at least on Facebook, has become every other awful fandom. I get that many, maybe even most hate Rings of Power. But they bring it up constantly.

Like, multiple pretty Silmarillion fanart posts recently have had random comments by people commenting about how nice they look compared to the commercialization of the Amazon show or something similar.

Can't we just have parts where the show isn't mentioned, one way or the other? Can't book posts be about the books? Can't we just have a few places free from hate?

One of my friends was complaining to me about that just the other weeks, the way her Tolkein Facebook groups have descended into total toxicity. Sucks :(

This fandom used to be my happy place. I've been on Facebook more than Tumblr lately just due to Facebook being useful for more than just fandom. But i think I'm going to go back to just Tumblr for that fandom.

What I just realy hate about it is how both sides pretend it's just the other side that's toxic when I've been really toxic shit takes from either side. The rabid show stans are not really better than the assholes who want to gatekeep the fandom.

The people shitting on particular kinks in very hypocritical and kinkshamey ways are annoying me.

MCU fandom continues to be a toxic cesspit about characters I like. So it's a day ending in "y."

fans who say 1-2 year age gaps in ships are terrible and therefore pedophilic. I'd hate to see their reaction to age gaps irl

Those people are one of my biggest fandom hates. Grrrr.

They really sound like people who have not only never had a relationship, but have never met anyone in a relationship.

Right? Wtf. Like I don't know ANYONE in my family who is dating/married to someone the same exact age. My parents are 5 years apart, my niece and her BF are... 2 or 3 years I think? My brother and his GF are 4 years apart. Even me and my best friend are '83 and '86.

People tell those fans about real life examples all the time and they aren't swayed, they'll just tell you your own parents are also weird pedophiles for their 5 year age gap.

I've got to think it's people who are very very young and don't realize that age gaps mean so much less as you get older. Like they think the difference between 25 and 30 is the same as the difference between 15 and 20.

(I really really hope they're very young.)

Hate hate hate hate HATE what fandom has done to term "pedophilia." The word is so overused, it's getting hard for me to take any claims of what could actually be pedophilia seriously. :/

...I could vent here but I just submitted a secret about it literally before I loaded this page, hahahahah.

Although in a different fandom... really freaking random headcanons, plus the refusal of some people to acknowledge that headcanons are JUST HEADCANONS, and people can headcanon whatever they want even if it makes no sense to you or goes against canon. Don't like, don't read. That's what I'm doing and it keeps my annoyance level low.

I'm not mad it exists, I enjoy a few works every now and then. But it ALWAYS clogs up my tags. So when I'm looking for A/B, I'll get A/B one chapter, 17 other fandoms for 17 other chapters. Very annoying.

I hate when authors do it.
Why you can't be a normal person and make SERIES instead of one fic?

In a totally petty and me-problem way...authors i like writing pairings i just CANNOT get behind, and that's their only output, at the moment. Grrrr.

Almost everyone in the Rough Trade writing group has moved to the 911 fandom. I tried. I really tried. It's just so boring. A lot of my favorite authors that I've followed for several years have moved to this fandom and I'm annoyed. Obvs they can do what they want, which is why I wouldn't ever tell them this to their faces.

There's a character in my fandom who I really enjoy when he’s portrayed like the antagonist he is, but it feels like he’s always stuck in the middle of discourse, split between the people who love him to the point of softening his actions or painting him as a good person, and the people who hate him to the point of openly telling off others the fandom who create content focused on him.

Tangentially related, but people who co-opt social justice speak to paint all people who like/dislike a character or ship as wrong or misguided. Even worse when it results in tokenism (i.e. accusing all people who like that character or ship as being part of a specific group, or raising examples of minorities within groups as mouthpieces that legitimize liking that character or ship). It not only cheapens the language, but it also makes real issues a lot harder to find.

That first paragraph is so many characters for me. I love villains. I hate when people pretend they aren't villains. I also hate when canon tries to redeem them by pretending their evil wasn't really that evil. Redemption is great, but don't pretend what happened before never happened. Ugh.

Also very yes to the second paragraph.

Both Helluva Boss antis and stans. The show is fine, it has its highs and lows like everything else, but the fandom is whack all around. I couldn’t imagine working on that show and having to deal with so many terminally online nutcases.

Accuse the creator antisemitism because the villain wants to commit genocide and it's not her place to write about genocide without being Jewish and having no Jewish people in the writer's room (which she does, but who cares about facts that contradict their story) even when it's condemned.

Accuse the same show of being antiblack too because one episode had a popular ship subplot in an episode that focused on a black character and the fandom focused more on the ship than the black character? And also according to some people, antiblack because the POC main character's love interest is white.

(But its sister show that also had a genocidal villain and no black main characters is fine! Now guess the differences between their creators. [One is gender and another is sexuality.])

Doxxing over shipping wars. Y'all really ready to ruin lives over Bridgerton stanning? 😵‍💫

The energy that goes into it, over fandom shit? I don't get it, y'all. I'm a sad loser with no real friends, the few I have I don't really do things with...and yet....y'alls the ones who are socializing with each other and trying to ruin each other's lives just because some couples aren't the focal point in the show for you?

Shit like this is why I throw my hands up at being active in fandom. Anyone can become the Villain of the Day, people are fickle and when given the chance to be an asshole they will seize it
