Re: Taylor Swift - Midnights (& 3 AM)
(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 01:19 am (UTC)(link)I was hesitant about this because, historically, I'm not a huge fan of the songs she has other artists featured in. I really like this one, however, though I know a lot of people are upset because Lana doesn't get her own verse. She's background vocals and harmonizing with Taylor only but their voices are so beautiful together.
( And it's like snow at the beach / Weird, but fuckin' beautiful / Flying in a dream / Stars by the pocketful)
You're On Your Own, Kid
Ahhhhh, track five. This is a special track. Taylor has a tendency of putting the most emotionally vulnerable song on an album as track five so this song had a lot of hype about it before it was released. Did it live up to that hype?
Kind of. It's emotionally devastating, absolutely, but it's up against some of my very fav. songs in her entire discography and, after a day of listening I can say I really, really, really love this. But it's not my fav. track five. Which is no shade to this song because with lyrics like:
I hosted parties and starved my body
Like I'd be saved by a perfect kiss
The jokes weren't funny, I took the money
My friends from home don't know what to say
I looked around in a blood-soaked gown
And I saw something they can't take away
'Cause there were pages turned with the bridges burned
Everything you lose is a step you take
So make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it
You've got no reason to be afraid
There's no denying that this song is A+ material and it's going to be hitting my list of favs.
Midnight Rain
The production on this song is noooot to everyone's taste. It was a bit of a shock for me too but, after listening through the album all day, I like the discombobulation it brings in a song where one half of a couple wants the safe, cozy life, while the other half wants the risks and the pain and chasing a dream.
( My town was a wasteland / Full of cages, full of fences / Pageant queens and big pretenders / But for some it was paradise)
Question…?
There are so many questions in this aptly-titled song but my biggest, most burning one was mostly wondering why there were so many assholes in this story. The chorus is great, the verses are amazing, but seriously, everyone in here is a jerk except Taylor and I don't blame her for her questions.
(Can I ask you a question? Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room / And every single one of your friends was making fun of you / But fifteen seconds later they were clapping too?)
Re: Taylor Swift - Midnights (& 3 AM)
(Anonymous) 2022-10-22 01:40 am (UTC)(link)LOL by title alone, I think this one got the most commentary prior to release. No one knew what to expect. This is a story of revenge and it's darkly beautiful and full of sharp edges.
(I don't start shit, but I can tell you how it ends / Don't get sad, get even / So on the weekends / I don't dress for friends / Lately I've been dressing for revenge)
Bejeweled
I adore, adore, ADORE the production here. It's so sparkly! And the way she says the word shimmer just gives me LIFE. This is a lady who is tired of being ignored by the person she loves and she's reminding herself, and him, that she's still got it. And she has SO got it.
(Best believe I'm still bejeweled / When I walk in the room / I can still make the whole place shimmer)
Labyrinth
This is such a dreamy, conflicted song. It's truly a maze of feelings to get lost in. One of my favs. I feel like I should have more to say about it but I just wind up chilling out to this song, breathing it in.
(Breathe in, breathe through, breathe deep, breathe out / I'll be getting over you my whole life)
Karma
Once upon a time there was rumours that Taylor was working on an album called Karma. This album never materialized, supposedly lost during the whole drama between 1989 and reputation, so people had high hopes that this would be a slamming indictment about the whole Kanye/Kim telephone call drama.
This… is not the song for that. At all. This is an amazing, rather silly little bop about how karma is all the good things in her life. Like her boyfriend. Her cat. The breeze in her hair.
(Karma is a cat / Purring in my lap 'cause it loves me / Flexing like a goddamn acrobat / Me and karma vibe like that)
Sweet Nothing
If there's a soft lullaby on the album, it's this one, and it's so gentle and warm. It's a very safe place, where there's no expectations at all.
(Outside they're push and shoving / You're in the kitchen humming / All that you ever wanted from me was / Nothing)
Mastermind
Last track on the standard album (and last one I'll do a blurb for because I'm tired and have a cat that is v. upset I'm not snuggling him RIGHT THIS MOMENT) but… like… this is a track that I cannot get over how much I love it? The way the music builds to the point where he's smirking. How this is the first time she's confessing.
How she's the mastermind. It's so, so good.
(If you fail to plan, you plan to fail / Strategy sets the scene for the tale / I'm the wind in our free-flowing sails / And the liquor in our cocktails)
