Hmm. IMO, Downton Abbey was pretty fluffy by period drama standards. I think maybe this genre is not for you.

Got bored and went through it last year just to see what everyone was on about with it. Kept thinking it was rich people propaganda. Also weirdly fluffy which is probably why people like it.

"rich people propaganda" about sums it up. Julian Fellowes is a Lord and a Tory.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It is explicitly Tory party propaganda, and I hate that people seem so keen to overlook that aspect.

Yes, this exactly. It infuriates me too. Blaaaarugh.

*shrug* People like what they like. Some of the story lines (Anna & Bates) got to be a drag, but I was pulling for Thomas and Edith and Daisy to the end.

Plus, it's rather pretty and not particularly 'cerebral' - good turn-your-brain-off stuff.

*shrug* Different strokes.

I rewatched the first three seasons early this year for the first time since they aired, and I enjoyed it even more the second time. IMO the character writing is excellent and is the show's biggest strength, though far from its only strength. Almost all the main characters have personalities that feel real and distinct to me, and we get a strong understanding of the interiority of each character. I find the dialogue very deft, the plot progression is clean and well-paced, the acting is exactly what the material calls for, and the production values are extremely solid.

There definitely is a consistent element of pro-aristocracy propaganda, but ultimately the narrative generally prioritizes kindness, compassion, and remaining flexible and open-minded in the face of things that challenge us, over any other tenets. Which are very good principles, IMO, regardless of the depiction being unrealistically idyllic and sanitized when compared to a reality that was nowhere near as good intentioned or tolerant.

I grew up poor and am still relatively poor, but personally I had no difficulty identifying with the Crawley's as they each struggled to figure out the best course of action or the best perspective on some aspect of a world that was full of unexpected change and upheaval.

This feels very much like wankbait from a troll.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Or someone’s honest opinions that aren’t glowing? I’m not saying they’re right, just that it’s just as possible they’re genuine opinions than a troll’s attempt at wankbait.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
To me it feels very much like a completely normal fandom secret.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
O hai Call Troll anon, been awhile. Make it longer next time.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's Sunday evening telly for boomers and the generation either side of them. Not gonna be much in the way of explosions, banter or vehicle chases. Watch something else, anon!

(Anonymous) 2022-10-23 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
OP here:
I don't need banter, and I don't want anything like "explosions, banter or vehicle chases". There ARE plenty of period dramas I actually like and feel are well done, and aren't as wooden as this.

Which period dramas did you like?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Just curious.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
I am also curious which period dramas you like! Personally I feel like early-seasons Downton was really good as far as period dramas go, but certainly if there's stuff out there that makes it seem shabby by comparison then I'd be interested in watching that. I'm speaking in earnest, for the record.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
It’s really weird of you to assume the only reason OP doesn’t like it is because there’s not any explosions, banter or vehicle chases.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know what I'm assuming, if anything.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
Then why did you add that part if you weren’t implying anything with it? You say something like that, and then get defensive about it, it’s weird. OP made the same comment I did too about how that wasn’t what they said they wanted.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Marvel fan eh?

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
This is a dumb reply with no actual basis for your assumption.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
This show was more of a period soap opera than anything else. I don't really classify it as a costume drama along the lines of say, various literary adaptations the BBC has done. Jane Austen, etc. I mean. It's more like "Reign", where the plot is more modern but the characters happen to be wearing historical (sort of) clothes, with a few period details.
