Yes, agreed.

*laughs sadly in russian* Anyway.
I don't know what country you are from, but often enough 18+ goes for absolutely mild things like smoking and swearing.
I think TV Sandman isn't especially gory, even diner episode and I am relatively squeamish

Yeah it was an 18 where I live too which I found odd, not that I'd rate it a 12 but a 15 probably? Just because there's some swearing and a bit of gore. But Netflix rating choices are weird honestly because I've watched things that were rated 15 that had no violence at all and the strongest swear was 'bastard', but I've got a feeling NF rates a bit higher than they need to cover themselves from people who are a bit... fussy about things that are not 100% pure.

Didn't you say you were German? Germany tends to slap higher ratings on anything depicting self-harm or suicidal behavior.

It had gay and transgender people in it, maybe?

I've been thinking of watching it but some people I know were quite shocked by the gore, and that put me off a little. But I think they were people who weren't used to that kind of content, so maybe I should give it a chance.

I haven't read the comics though. Maybe I should do that instead.

If you're not good with gore, the comics may be worse tbh, although of course they don't move.

Episode 5 is the worst gore wise, and it's toned down considerably compared to the comics issue. You could probably get away with a synopsis for that episode. Not that there's not gore in the rest of the show, but 5 is... eesh.

I have watched gory shows and movies in the past, just not that many.

I made it all the way through Elfen Lied but that was animated so it was different.

When I get time to watch I'll see what I think of the rest of the show and judge from there if I can handle Episode 5 or not.

Thanks for the info!

Comics are much more gory by a mile. Also they are more hmmm cynical, TV show plots and characters are softer and kinder. For example TV heavily implies SA in one of the episodes instead of showing it and it was a divide for ppl since some viewers didn't get it.
If you watch you can judge your tolerance by episode 3 - it has some fun gore. I think episode 5 has same levels of showing it just with much more horror build up

SA
also you can try audible version. It is really good if audio books are your thing

“it has some fun gore”

This isn’t super relevant to the conversation, nor is my personal thoughts interesting to anyone, I just find this part funny. To me, there’s no such thing as fun gore. Just gore I look away from fast enough, and gore I’m not as lucky to miss. I used to be able handle it when I was a teen getting into horror with gorehound friends. But I lost my ability to handle it, almost like I got resensitized or something.

I don’t think Sandman is that bad overall, but I definitely looked away for a lot of episode 5. I thought it was better in the comics even though it was more explicitly gory, because drawn gore doesn’t affect me as much as live action gore. Neither does most gore in anime and manga(rosehiptea mentioned Elfen Lied, and that never bothered me, but then it’s more bloody than gory, and I have zero issues seeing blood), or video games. Just live action, especially with special effects getting more realistic looking. Most practical effect gore from the 20th century is more or less fine, as long as it doesn’t get Peter Jackson excessive.

I was trying not to be spoilery too much. :D
I think gore in episode 3 is a type of fun gore - it's a bit over the top, but not visceral or has any close ups. Thinking about, the thing in episode 1 wasn't that gory, but it had more emotional impact. But it's of course a matter of opinion and personal threshold.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That does make sense, I get that now :)

You are right about episode 3. It wasn’t “fun” gore for me, although that’s irrelevant because that is a subjective thing. But it wasn’t bad. And episode 1 was also not bad for me. The show is definitely toned down compared to the original comic.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeahhh, it is much more toned down. I am happy for it, I don't mind gore, but I do not care for it, if it makes sense. And drawn things don't look that realistic and upsetting anyway. I've never thought about the comics as something especially gory. But when you start thinking about it they totally are.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That does make sense to me. And yeah, agreed about not finding drawn things realistic enough to be upsetting, even if they are gory.

SOMEone hasn't seen Repo! The Genetic Opera.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually have, and I really like it. The gore was the thing I enjoyed the least about it, but it wasn’t too bad considering it was pretty much fake looking practical effects imo.

Zydrate Anatomy is my favorite song out of the whole soundtrack, that song is so infectious!

The puppet moment in Thankless Job is, I feel, genuinely fun. Also Amber's face falling off, but that might be schadenfreude because she's played by Paris Hilton who back then, was much hated.

Implied sex and LGBTQ+ content, possibly? Some places rate everything a notch higher if it's not het.

(Anonymous) 2022-10-24 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that got to be homophobia.
