Why is bringing Ten back nothing but wankery, whereas other multi-doctor episodes are acceptable?

Because he's not actually supposed to be 10. He's supposed to be 14. It's not bringing back 10, like the crossover episodes. It's trying to sneak in an ostrich by claiming it's a smoothy.

This. It's Ten But Also Fourteen. That's what's so egregious.

I honestly don't understand what the problem with this is. To me it feels like it's basically just a slight re-arrangement of previous versions of multi-doctor stories. I don't know whether they'll use it to tell a good story or a bad story but I really don't see what the fuss is - OK, so he's 14 with the face of 10, it's a different concept, so what? And I'm really curious why it's so intrinsically bad.

Meh. At this point I don't even care as long as it has better writing.

You sound like you don't understand the difference between Watsonian and Doylist perspectives (or in-universe and behind-the-scenes perspectives, if you prefer). From a Doylist perspective, them bringing back Tennant and calling him 14 was done for audience popularity. If he's not really going to be back on the show for very long, in-universe it doesn't really matter what number he is. Fans care about the number. The characters don't.

From a Watsonian perspective, the characters don't know the difference and it doesn't matter, sure. From a Doylist perspective, it's annoying and fanservicey as FUCK.
