It's outright hate at the character that hurts, I suppose because I identify with him in ways that makes it feel like it's hate aimed at me - or just hate of someone I love, basically, like it hurts if someone attacks your partner. But it does get mixed up in people who assume things like if you love a character who's done bad things, you must be okay with those bad things in general, so it's kind of a mix.
