I don't think people's impulse to reward and support people who make stuff they like is a bad thing, even though it does conflict with the ethos of amateurism.

"Amateurism". Seriously?

Fandom and the creation of fanworks isn't "amateur" work or whatever the heck that point is, it's a hobby. It's sole purpose is engaging with a thing you love in a way you enjoy. You can debate forever about the morality or ethics of making money off fandom, but at the end of the day, if you're doing it solely for the purpose of making money, what you're doing isn't fandom.

AYRT

The ethos of amateurism just means the idea that you should do things for their own sake, for the love of them, and not for the money.

I don't know what your problem is or why you think that's so objectionable.

My dude, "amateur" literally is derived from the concept of doing something "for the love" of it, not a signpost of quality/lack thereof

Anything that's a hobby is amateur anon because it's is done out of love not solely for financial gain, it's not a marker of quality. And fandom is a hobby so it falls under the label of amateur.
