“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I cannot freaking believe it won an Oscar.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-03 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
In Chile we were expecting The Mole Agent to win the oscar. That documentary broke my heart multiple times.

Not from Chile but from a different part of South America, just here to say the Mole Agent made me cry LIKE A BITCH. Oh my god, I cried while watching it, I cried when it was done, I cried during the shower I took afterwards, hell, my mom phoned me when I got out and I was STILL crying over it. It's such a beautiful and heartbreaking movie and it 100% deserved the Oscar over that octopus... whatever the fuck it was. But we all know the Oscars aren't an actually serious award anyway.

AYRT: I knew the synopsis about the Mole Agent, but never had the heart to watch it for some reason. I saw a review in Youtube and my heart was right, it so heartbreaking and so real about the situation of senior people in nursing homes in our country that it definitely reserved the Oscar. At least Sergio Chamy was thankful that the academy would nominate the documentary and even posed with an Oscar from someone else, but dang it wasn't a bitter taste that the octopus shit won over that.

Just read the Wiki synopsis of this. Yeah, he sounds like a douche.
"Foster describes the effect of this mentorship-like relationship the octopus provided him, teaching him a lesson on the fragility of life and humanity's connection with nature."

Oh please. Get a goldfish.

Maggie Mae Fish, is that you?

I got about 15 minutes into it and had to give up. I just couldn’t stand the guy.

I wanted to see octopuses doing cool things. Hopefully filmed at a reasonable distance. I really don’t care some guy’s emotional quest to feel closer to nature.

I just hate that kind of almost twee anthropomorphism. The octopus does not care about you. The octopus is not here to teach you anything. It is an octopus, leave it alone to do octopus things.

Not familiar with this, but I swear, that looks like the cover of a Chuck Tingle knockoff.

I thought the same thing lmao

https://www.pajiba.com/AMP/film_reviews/theres-a-reason-critics-arent-wild-about-my-octopus-teacher-winning-the-best-documentary-oscar.php

My Octopus Teacher wants to sell the story of this incredible moment where man meets nature and common ground is found. A human finds himself through the magic of a common octopus, while the animal… well, actually, we don’t really know what they’re supposed to get from it. This is all about the homo sapien who doesn’t want to raise his own kid or be around his wife because he’s too busy projecting his emotional nonsense onto an animal. Foster talks about the wonders of the oceans but seems blind to the true power of the sea. For him, it’s just another playground for a mid-life crisis, and the filmmakers seem utterly uninterested in interrogating him as a subject.
