I only ever saw the movie so I probably was considered a fake-fan by RENT fan standards. But I was 17 and was a bit obsessed with it because I was getting excited over crumbs of anything close to Queer media when I first saw it.
But most of my experience was people telling me how bad and unrealistic it was than meeting actual fans of the musical.

Yeah, I think a lot of Rent fans back in the day got into it because those crumbs of queer representation were important at the time, however inadequate they feel in retrospect.

The modicum of queer rep it offered was the only reason I saw the show, so I get you. It did bisexuals pretty dirty, but that was unfortunately common att. It did have something to say about the horrors of the HIV-AIDS Crisis, and I do think that’s a pretty important thing to talk about even now. Whether the rest of the play was any good beyond that or some songs is up to personal opinions, of course.
