Seriously. And it's the midst of the AIDS crisis, but our main leads are rich kids who think they're revolutionaries because they don't want to have to pay rent like everyone else in the world does. Aaaaiiiiiieeeeeee.

Um, I think you may have missed some details there?

Like, I didn't get the impression the leads were rich at all. It's possible they came from rich families but it was clear that once on their own, they were struggling in New York (Mark, Roger, Benny and Maureen shared an apartment at one point). Benny married into money, and promised his friends they wouldn't have to pay rent if he bought the building, and then broke his promise. That's why the others are angry, at first.

Their parents are frequently trying to call them and help them out, and they refuse and act like their parents expressing care are being intrusive. And there's a whole number with them being entirely obnoxious in a restaurant.

"help them out" - I think this is up to interpretation, but I didn't get the impression their parents were calling to send them stuff. Only one of the calls mentioned a gift, and that was for the holidays. Mostly they were calling to see how the kids were doing. Mark's mother seemed the most persistent, which I could see as being annoying, especially for a young adult trying to make it in the world. Also, we don't know what the main characters' upbringing was like. Maybe some of their parents really were intrusive types and the kids would rather stay where they are than deal with them. Again, that part is open to interpretation.

I'm not sure what them being obnoxious in a restaurant has to do with anything.

Well. Angry because he broke his promise, but also angry because instead of just saying "hey, I'm gonna need you guys to pay rent going forward," he wanted a year's worth of back rent immediately.
