it so interesting to me how polarizing they were. you either loved them (me, it felt like the writers actually cared about them as a people) or you thought they were the worst part. but I think they and the dwarves felt the most tolkien like.

I think they fumbled with their plotline a bit to the point where it felt meandering and disconnected from the main story. Should've integrated it better, or else saved it for season two.

i do think this was people's main quibble, and that's probably why i didn't mind it. i don't need everything to be purposeful immediately. I'm fine with just sitting with characters, especially since there was plenty of plot elsewhere.

And honestly it is very fitting for something based on Tolkien. He has plenty of parts that aren't in there for a specific purpose but just in there.

right! the naming of who fell behind was so compelling to me. it didn't give me much information plot-wise, but it brought the harfoots alive

That works for the viewers who're already Tolkien fans and want to spend time touring Middle Earth -- well, however many of them that are still here after all the controversies, anyway -- but it's bad from a show-crafting perspective.

i think it's hard from an audience expectation perspective, because you see even with some criticisms of HOTD that audiences expect more action, but I disagree that a show shouldn't craft itself like that.
