The secretary said you couldn't hang out together? I guess I'd get it if you guys were in the room without permission, but it sounds like that wasn't the problem, so the secretary's a weirdo. I don't understand why you couldn't keep talking to your friend though. Couldn't you guys hang out in the library or something if you wanted a quiet place to talk?

Nah, we had explicit permission until they went "mm on second thought, no" for no reason. Weird. But I got a lot of shit for being a "weird kid" then and that was my "why doesn't she show any interest in boys?" phase (too invested in anime dudes) so... There was no library either (where I live some schools are primary + lower secundary education only and those schools don't always have libraries). No quiet place, only recess hell. So we went back to talking to our own classmates and doing our own things probably :(

Aww, I'm so sorry, OP. What a jerk that secretary was to just rescind permission like that. I hope you can make a RL fandom friend soon if you haven't already.

Right? Oh, that was SO long ago and I ended up making some IRL fandom friends eventually ... kind of (all of whom were either 1) TOO young or TOO old, 2) not into the same fandoms as me, you know "I like anime" but it's actually One Piece, 3) con-goers, that's how I met them, not at school. So I did make some but only "kinda") . Boo hoo thanks secretary

It also might have been the secretary hated seeing kids have fun with a TV show, or spending too much time with any one person, or anything that wasn't the most conventional After School Special way to have friends. I had teachers and playground aides who made us stop if they found out we were pretending to be characters from popular shows (I think because "TV bad, read books instead") and one time a teacher said me and my best friend didn't have enough other friends so she made a rule that we were only allowed to play together on certain days. Actually, I think a lot of school staff just like finding excuses to make kids miserable because they hate their jobs.

Maybe, no idea. The staff was... okay but they seemed to be concerned about my lack of interest in boys. It's a long story that involves me being 1) autistic biro ace 2) legit too invested in anime to care 3) I had a crush on the teacher's son, to be fair, which I hid like it was the worst sin ever because the teacher actively supported his non-existent relationship with this go-getter girl and I was The Unhinged One 4) this teacher also supported my non-existent relationship with this minihimbo whom I had a crush on according to bullies (I didn't) and indeed I was disgusted by him not in a "ew boys" way, in a "ew not that boy" way. Fun times (not fun)

In retrospect, having a fandom friend was THE cool thing about school and they took that away from me ... so maybe you're right and it's all about making kids miserable.
