It doesn't look like anything to me.

['pat on head'] <-- This is the worst part of that ad for me. Torture a grown woman OR pat her on the head through the bars of her cell like she's a child or a dog... I'd seriously rather be tortured. Most kinks I think nothing of but that damnable head patting thing that is ubiquitous to anime is awful.

Okay ew. That's....ew.

Kind of like the weird game ads that pop up sometimes that are a female character who is all beat up and cold and starving? And kicked out by her boyfriend or something? And you get to help her or...make it worse? It's really weird and really creepy.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I think the game ads are getting weirder and weirder.

They are. And if the games are really like the ads? The games are getting grosser and grosser.

oh yeah, and it's always the dude is cheating or they're in divorce court and the kid is like begging for the dad to acknowledge? and the ad always play the "game" so that the woman and perhaps kid dies. i really want to know who those ads are being directed to.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
They're meant to either make you so mad that you play because the ad is that incompetent, or tug your heartstrings

i can't understand how either anger or pity/sympathy would make you want to play whatever mechanism they're demonstrating.

You've never watched someone be so bad at a task you go, "Move aside, let me do it?"

played the little sample game if there is one? yes. downloaded the real game? absolutely not.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 11:35 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I think the target audience for that one is soap opera viewers.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 05:37 am (UTC)(link)
Right?! And like, the narrative always implies that her man cheats because she's not making enough of an effort with her appearance, or some shit like that, and the hook is like, "Fix her life by making her conventionally attractive again!" Kill it with fire.

Man, this. YUCK.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
If archive of our own is anything to judge by, there are plenty of people who like this sort of thing. And even though I definitely would not engage with a story like that, knowing that is like whatever. That said, I think the content matter is strong enough that I would prefer it not be publicly advertised to a broad mainstream audience who is trying to avoid it (me), and that it would be possible for Youtube to not recommend such advertisements for the reason that it can make people uncomfortable.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
There's usually a big difference between what's going on in fics where favourite characters get tortured and this though. You're identifying with the character suffering in most fics. In these games you are the perpetrator of that suffering. Big difference. HUGE difference.

Yeah, these ads get pretty fucked up. Probably just for shock value. I hope it’s not because they think this sounds like a fun game.

And most of the time ads like these don’t represent the actual gameplay at all.

So you're telling me that - while youtube is sanitizing the shit out of their website to the point where videos are getting age-restricted without warning to the creators (and even when the creators of said videos try to keep within the guidelines and STILL get age restricted for just talking about 'sensitive' matters like old media or the existence of gay people), in addition to censoring words like suicide and swear words - the website still put out adverts like this into the platform???

cool. good to know.

I looked up a review on a mainstream site, and it doesn’t say anything about torture: https://www.pocketgamer.com/path-to-a-new-world/review/ (Despite the URL, the article says Path to Nowhere.) I don’t know what the ads are on about.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
OOf, these are bad. Mobile game ads in general are super bad but this one? YIKES

(Anonymous) 2022-11-11 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
To my understanding, most of these game ads are super crazy but the actual games tend to be sort of boring. But I've never played any of these games, only ever seen a few YT videos like Drew Gooden or tiffanyferg do where they deep dive on random internet stuff.

And I'm so glad I pay for YT Premium. YT is so much easier to watch when you don't have ads. Those really long video essays? Worth it not to have to sit through ads

There is a Zombie game which ads were never Not Sexist but the worst offender where they had this Japanese schoolgirl tied up and about to turn with the options coming up were a syringe (the cure) and a feather.

Men gonna men. They hate us, remember that always.
