Re: What are you reading?
I bought this a while ago because I read historical fiction from time to time but always go for obvious things like Medieval Europe, so I was like "China in the 14th century? Definitely out of my comfort zone" - it's also a reimagining with Zhu Yuanzhang actually being the sister who took on her (deceased) brother's identity and outwardly lived as a man for the rest of her life.
I'll be honest, even though the premise hooked me I'm finding it a slower read than I expected. The prose is lovely but there's just a lot of pages of nothing and then you get a flurry of stuff and Zhu isn't even the main character for much of it. I'm still enjoying it, just not as much as I expected!
Other books I've read recently and enjoyed: Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (part atmospheric semi-body horror, part meditation on the nature of grief and also change in an established relationship) and The Five by Hallie Rubenhold (an account of the lives of the 'canon five' killed by Jack the Ripper, it essentially says "fuck talking about that guy" and tells you about the real lived experiences of those five women.)
