What are you reading?

I still need 2 books to get my 12 for the year.

I was given a 1912 edition of A Christmas Carol recently, so I'm reading that one. Other than that, not much. Nobody is writing the type of books I like to read. I like traditional fantasy novels, give me a wizard, an orphan who is the true king, and a couple of elves all on a quest in the green wood fair, and I'm happy. I would like more books like that.

Between You, Me, and the Honeybees by Amelia Diane Coombs. I'm halfway through it and it's pretty cute so far.

Rereading the Lord of the Rings at the moment.

I recently read Belladonna which I LOVED. I am in the middle of the second book of the Discovery of Witches series but as much as I like the idea, the first two books are almost 800 pages each and it's honestly a bit of a slog...

Re-reading Shogun (James Clavell) for the first time in 20 years, and also re-reading the Hunger Games books.

She Who Became The Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan.

I bought this a while ago because I read historical fiction from time to time but always go for obvious things like Medieval Europe, so I was like "China in the 14th century? Definitely out of my comfort zone" - it's also a reimagining with Zhu Yuanzhang actually being the sister who took on her (deceased) brother's identity and outwardly lived as a man for the rest of her life.

I'll be honest, even though the premise hooked me I'm finding it a slower read than I expected. The prose is lovely but there's just a lot of pages of nothing and then you get a flurry of stuff and Zhu isn't even the main character for much of it. I'm still enjoying it, just not as much as I expected!

Other books I've read recently and enjoyed: Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield (part atmospheric semi-body horror, part meditation on the nature of grief and also change in an established relationship) and The Five by Hallie Rubenhold (an account of the lives of the 'canon five' killed by Jack the Ripper, it essentially says "fuck talking about that guy" and tells you about the real lived experiences of those five women.)

This Wicked Fate by Kalynn Bayron (a sequel to This Poison Heart) - it's a YA novel that's a modern day fantasy mixed in with references to Greek mythology.

Also nearly finished reading 'Transgender Warriors: Making History from Joan of Arc to Dennis Rodman' by Leslie Feinberg, which is part autobiography and part history book that's been a very interesting read.

Currently on a good pace on the Silmarillion. Aside from that I'm reading "Her Majestys Royal Coven" which is a modern take about witches in the UK and has an interesting twist. Curious how it'll end.
