I'm really embarrassed to ask this, but my only sexual experiences have been with vaginas and I've never been interested enough in men to check out their groin areas. I'm writing my first erotic fic involving men, and I need to know: What happens to a penis when it gets aroused? Does it rise slowly like a corpse out of a coffin, or does it pop up like BOING!!!! Does its volume expand slowly like Austin Powers blowing up that balloon or does it become fully engorged with a snap of a finger? Does it ever poke out of an open fly?

It... sort of depends. It can happen very quickly or it can happen quite slowly, depending on the situation and mood. And not all dicks work the same in the first place - there's the famous "grower vs shower" issue in play, and this is a very real thing. Some men's penises (the showers) are about the same length whether they're erect or flaccid. For some other men (the growers), the flaccid penis is smaller and then it gets longer and thicker when they become erect. And then, the penis usually gets thicker and stiffer, but they don't necessarily happen at the same rate. So for example, you can have times where the cock gets really thick and heavy but is still not very hard.

Adding on to the above: age can play a factor but how much varies. Most men take longer to get hard in their 40s than when they were in their 20s.
