I'd rather they pick a different historical era for a change.

This. There are so many more interesting historical periods (in many different countries) than the regency era that is so overdone.

Yes, seriously! There's the whole world to explore!

Yes! I would love to see a series taking place in pre-Islamic Arabia or Kievan Rus.

Both of those would be amazing.

I agree on both of those, especially pre-Islamic Arabia. IDK why I find that area and era so culturally fascinating.

Meanwhile, Kievan Rus (and Tsarist Russia as well) have fascinated me for years. I have a ton of books on Russian history, some I got when I was a kid.

I am a bit against it mostly because people are going to base their history knowledge on this show. I mean, people managed to base all their view of Russian history on Anastasia. But damn I am tired of ugly dresses Regency. There is so much history and world to choose from and to play with

Good ideas!

I'd love to see a series set in medieval Al-Andalus.

Where's our ongoing series about the shady dealings of Ea-Nasir, ffs?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Where are the big Ancient Egyptian dramas for all the Ancient Egypt-obsessed kids who grew up? So much history to play with, whether it's fictional or based on actual events!

(Anonymous) 2022-11-15 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously! That would be fantastic to see. Someone needs to do this.

Hiding under the bed from the uproar if they fail the casting purity test, that is where. Nobody is gonna greenlight a show anywhere that isn't traditionally lily white right now for fear of being torn to shreds if they make even the slightest mistake, and you've only yourselves to blame.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-15 09:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nah.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
The Lymond books could be fun.

They go lots of colourful places and the lead is a tiny, self-destructive, bisexual Scotsman.

I feel there's meat on that bone...

I'm up for another remake of Pride and Prejudice. The 1995 miniseries will probably always be my favorite, but I would watch another along those lines with different actors. I just don't care for "fresh takes" like the latest Persuasion.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-15 11:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I have to agree. To me, it isn't about historical inaccuracies, it's about creators making an effort to understand what it was like to live in that culture and at that time, and how that impacts their characters. Without that it feels like just an asthetic they chose.

I'm not really someone who bags on costuming (I liked Reign even with the century-hopping dress aesthetic, for example), but the fashion in Bridgerton bugs me tremendously. It's all wrong from the foundation garments on out and (worse) is very unflattering to the actresses.
