Yeah, having never been in Trek fandom, I honestly don't know if the use of a portmanteau is standard for this pairing, but even I know that if one IS going to use a portmanteau, it's Spirk.

Today is the first day of my life I have ever pondered the nature of said topic.

I've thought about it because, as a Mulder/Scully shipper, it is nails on a chalk board for me when newbs come along and start referring to shipping 'Sculder.'

If you want to abbreviate, it's M/S or MSR. The original series ran for nine years and 'Sculder' (or 'Mully' for that matter) was not a thing.

Is it inconsequential? Yes. Can I force people to adhere to the old ways? No. I just find it annoying is all.

Not a thing? My first e-mail was literally sculder79 back in 94/95ish

That was your personal email. Find me a fic that was recced using the term "sculder." Find me an archive that used the word "sculder." I'll wait.

You two literally just gave me Usenet flashbacks, lol. Around the time the movie was coming out (‘97? ‘98?) and there were a lot of rumors, there were a handful of fans on alt.tv.x-files who were really trying to make Sculder a thing and about an equal number of people who were deeply offended by it. I’m sure that you can find traces of the arguments if you really want to. I’m also reasonably sure that angelfire and geocities died and took their sculder fic with it.
