Stewart is Jewish. He has a right to his opinion, and I think his opinion counts for a lot more than mine does on this issue. Also, I don't find his statements to be hateful. Whether or not his stance is misguided is another issue.

OP of secret: I am Jewish!

I wasn't assuming you weren't. I wasn't talking about you. I think non-Jewish people who go around writing Jewish people off morally for having opinions on Jewishness and antisemitism that they disagree with are being wildly self-righteous and that their outrage is the opposite of constructive.

Who cares what non-Jews think about this. It isn't even about you.

nayrt, but this is exactly what Stewart was talking about. Shutting down conversation about things that offend gets people nowhere.

+1 and I agree with him in this regard. Our social inability to have conversations about political topics without lurching instantly into impenetrable outrage and presumptive condemnation is making every single one of the issues we're allegedly trying to ameliorate so much thornier and more entrenched.

For every person you manage to condemn and shame out of a bad opinion, there are so many more who will become more entrenched. In part out of petty spite, yes, but also out of a sense that there is no conceivable way for them to ever come to a stable truce or find common ground with someone so unswervingly self-righteous and condemnatory, even if they give up ground, change their stance, and concede on some things.

*I'm using the figurative 'you'. Hopefully that's obvious, but just in case it's not. :)

Perfect, perfect comment.

NAYRT

I agree about the self-righteousness being counter productive. But I don’t really like blaming people for someone becoming radicalized into bigotry except the person themselves and the people feeding them the hate and misinformation. That’s not giving these people enough accountability for their actions. In my opinion at least. And people shouldn’t change their views or concede points just for a favorable reaction, or anything like that. If someone continues to be a bigot out of spite because some people, even self-righteous people, might not be nice to them if they were to change their views or concede points, then that person was going to find an infinite amount of faulty and flimsy reasons to keep being a bigot. Outside people shouldn’t be blamed for them being who they are, especially not before they themselves are blamed first. I just don’t feel comfortable shaming even sanctimonious assholes for bigots being bigots. Because at some point the bigots themselves should be held accountable before fingers are pointed every other way. It just feels to me personally like saying “Look what you’ve done! This person is now anti-Semitic, and susceptible to becoming a neo-Nazi, and it’s all because you weren’t nicer to him!”. I’m not saying that’s exactly what’s happening, or at all what you’re saying. Just trying to, admittedly poorly, explain why that line of reasoning doesn’t work for me. I’m still all for judging self-righteous people for being self-righteous. Just not blaming them for people being radicalized.

I mean, if you want only Jewish people to reply to this secret, then you are in the wrong place. And if you want only non-Jewish people who feel exactly the same way as OP does to reply to this secret, then you...are also in the wrong place.
