(Anonymous) 2022-11-17 01:12 am (UTC)(link)You sound like a good person, so I would love to know your reasons for finding it interesting. Because I don't get a lot of that from sane people often, really. The incel and "but Aerith is a whore!" discourses are just.. sigh.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-11-17 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)As for why cloti, I really liked the slow build up to it. When Tifa is first introduced there's obvious tension there that left me wondering what exactly the deal was but then that tension gets overshadowed by the Aerith of it all. I remember feeling bad for Tifa because clerith was so obvious. Then the story swerves and the lifestream happens and it makes you reexamine all the Cloud/Tifa moments in a new light and I was just hooked. They both have a quiet devotion towards each other that really just rings my bell lol.
I'm one of those people that thinks there's space in the narrative for both ships. Cloud being into Aerith doesn't change his love for Tifa. Cloud loving Tifa doesn't mean that his affection for Aerith wasn't real. I think remake did a great job of giving both ships equal weight and depth. Remake did a great job with zerith too. You really feel Aerith's grief over Zack. I'm not so secretly hoping they get to reunite somehow.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-17 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)Ooh. I get it. I mean, the thing is that Aerith was probably never truly in love with Cloud because she didn't even have time for that - she was drawn to him at first because she was in love with the Zack she saw in Cloud probably, and then comes the entire "I want to meet... you" exchange, which some read as meaning that Aerith saw something and wanted to get to know the real Cloud and others read as "she wanted to fuck because she is a whore" and maybe the truth is somewhere between those 2 stances. And I mean, they do reunite in the lifestream according to FFVII AC, so that's good.
To even put them as rivals in a love triangle feels weird to me, because the more you get to know Aerith really is a young widow doing her best and this helps explain why she never wavers from the "live fast die young" lane. If anything she was a catalyst to make Cloti happen. But the thing about FFVII that makes it so special even to this day is the fact that the characters felt so complex and real, that people REALLY projected onto them, thus heated debates. My "hate Cloti!" phase had everything to do with the fact that I was ostracized as a kid so the Nibelheim flashbacks had me go "oh wait she bullied him" and that triggered Something bad in kid me lol. Fast forward a few years (decades? oh wow) and I now realize their childhood thing was more like "'my neighbor is kinda cool' and then stuff goes awry for reasons unrelated to me or my neighbor" than anything else. Yeah, devotion as you put is a good word since he risks it all for her and she gives back once they're older. Just like in real life I guess there is (or should be) space for everyone and there are different forms of love and feelings so it would be nice if the fandom wasn't nasty about it.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-11-17 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)Aerti is great. I really do think expanding on Aerith and Tifa's friendship is the best way to combat the rampant hate of the opposing fandoms. It's hard to argue that Aerith is intentionally rubbing anything in Tifa's face or that Tifa secretly hates Aerith and is happy she dies when you have to watch them love the shit out of each other in HD. And read about it in brand new novels.
Yeah, I come down on the side of Aerith not being in love with Cloud (nor him with her), but the potential was there. It could have happened if things hadn't played out the way they did. There's obvious interest on both sides. And I don't think this interest diminishes cloti in any way. Aerith is cute. She's fun. She pushes him in a way very similar to Zack (which is I think part of why he's drawn to her but that also might be my Cloud/Zack agenda lol). Why wouldn't he like her? He can have a crush on Aerith and also have his feelings for Tifa locked deep in his heart underneath all the trauma. It makes all the characters more interesting.
I had a period of Aerith hate and it was 100% me in my "I'm not like the other girls" phase. Teenage me: She's pink and girly and annoying. I'm a tomboy, I'm one of the guys, blah, blah, blah. I got over that around the time of CC, which is where Aerith truly won me over. When she was like "this basket is ugly af, make me a new one" I died laughing. Both girls are great, it's just their fandoms that suck.
Re: Secrets you don't want to make...
(Anonymous) 2022-11-17 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)It does! That's just the canon interpretation of things, though: the potential might have existed, even, but it was cut short. And again, different types of feelings exist, and in real life it's hard to compare them all, we make choices. It's hardly diminishing though, if anything, it's the opposite, or should be. If we choose someone when we have a lot of options... that's probably more meaningful than choosing someone because we're stuck in an island together. So that's a pointless argument.
That's where the projection comes in! What you're saying is the point I think. And maturity makes us see things in a new light and I guess this is why the best works are like this when we revisit them and go "ohh... new perspectives" (and why FFVIIR fandom is a little less nasty thankfully) ; back when I played FFVII for the first time I was deep in my "well I am not one of the girls but I am not one of the boys either maybe I am just an accident of nature" phase and Aerith being outwardly cute in a subversive way ressonated with me ("wow this girl is gaga! jus like me fr") but for a long time I thought I didn't like Tifa not because of Tifa herself but because of the fandom. And then remake and remake fandom happened and I went "...well maybe I need to reevaluate that". It's been a ride. They really are, though. The entire cast is so lovable. The remake is dreamy too.
(Unrelated-ish side-note, my Clack agenda is pretty strong too, and this is why I say there are different types of feelings and they can't and shouldn't be compared in order to be diminished: it's different in canon not inherently better or worse and this is the fun part!)
