I think it's partially backlash against the puritan side of fandom that wants all wholesome and no messy when it comes to representation. That side has been very vocal and sometimes harmful. But because of it I occasionally see backlash like "Wholesome queer content is the bad representation actually! Being queer is inherently messy and unwholesome in the eyes of society and showing us as anything less is just cishet bootlicking. Kids are puritans because their queer representation is too wholesome! Unwholesome content only! If you can't handle that you're not queer!" Like damn we really can never have both. Anyway who does care if it's not realistic. Some queer kids with messy lives want escapism and wholesome fun too; as long as they're not saying that's all that should exist, let them have it even if it's not "realistic."

pushing back the other way is no less stupid or harmful because it still claps back onto queer creators primarily. no one is better for doing this, they're just as bad as the people they're 'fighting' against.

Did I sound like I was defending the pushback? Because I wasn't. You sound like you're trying to argue with me about something I was agreeing with you on.
