[rape mention]

I used to think that I would never like a/b/o, but now that the genre is evolving past its classic premise of "it's not rape if the omega is in heat", I've actually been enjoying it. I've had good time reading stories where alphas hook up with alphas or omegas with omegas, stories centering on betas, omegas being tops, explorations of politics of such worlds, etc. And above all - so much fully consensual sex!

Agreed. It’s still not something I seek out, and it’s definitely not my kink. But I’ve found some cute and well-written a/b/o works in the past year or so. Works that also have fascinating world building. I never thought I would enjoy anything a/b/o because it seemed to all have the consent issues you mentioned before. I’m glad that’s changed.

Yeah. I remeber checking out abo fics for the first time and the premise was always the omega being miserable and being forced into sex "because biology", ugh... I'm happy writers are moving past that

But... honestly, what IS the point of ABO? Though I did try to read a couple of fics, it's just... there is nothing that can't be done without ABO dynamics except for the shitty parts.

I have no idea which parts are "the shitty parts" to you, but whatever those parts are, undoubtedly there are people who love those parts.

As someone who is squicked by gender essentialism and 99% of noncon, what I love about ABO is mostly heats, pheromones, knotting, and self-lubing butts. And occasionally breeding kink, but that's very hit and miss for me.

Yes, each of these things could be established anew every time an author wanted to write them, but ABO makes it so you don't have to do a bunch of work establishing why these elements are in your fic.

Sometimes I also like ABO fics with more worldbuilding, where the fic challenges and subverts the gender essentialism of the ABO world. I'm a big fan of BAMFy omegas, and Alphas who respect and adore them. But I'm not always in the mood for that; sometimes it's just about the porn.

What's the point of any trope/kink?

People (who aren't you) find it hot and/or interesting to read about
