I'm honestly confused about why people are so upset because when Hamilton came to my city and I wanted to get tickets, I had to sit in a queue for five or six hours too? And this wasn't using Ticketmaster, this was the local theater's own box office system. That's just what's going to happen when you have thousands of people all trying to get tickets for one thing at the same time.

Much more intense demand relative to supply for this tour compared to nearly all other events PLUS live events largely took two years off so people aren't used to it anymore PLUS the ticketbuying process for Taylor's last tour apparently was much more effective at dealing with these problems

As someone who's never sat in a queue, it seems expected for large venue filling performances. The specific complaint I have seen is less the wait time and more the scalpers buying up all the tickets and then reselling for ridiculous amounts of money.

I'm not sure how they could stop that, though, aside from only letting each person buy one ticket, but then you'd have a problem if you were trying to buy for yourself and a couple of friends so you could all go together.

NAYRT

It's not really *that* difficult to come up with ways to limit transfer of tickets between people, or to limit the number of tickets people are able to buy in the first place, while still allowing actual fans to buy tickets in groups or split them between people or whatever. There's always going to be some annoyances for fans with those systems but it's very a solvable problem.

But also, like, Ticketmaster literally runs a verified reseller service, so

I mean, I don't see how they could stop me from, say, buying four tickets and then reselling three of them via NextDoor or something, since IME they only check ID when you actually pick up the tickets and not when you use them to get in. I once bought a ticket off a friend because she came down with the flu a few days before a concert she had a ticket for, so she just gave the physical ticket to me and I was able to use it to get in no problem.

That's the part I don't see how they could stop.

But even something like physical tickets significantly cuts down on the amount of reselling that takes place. If buying a resold ticket requires a physical copy of the ticket to change hands (or a bracelet, or dongle, or whatever), that on its own would significantly cut down on the amount of organized ticket reselling that would go on.

It would generally be very annoying and intrusive for fans, and it wouldn't eliminate reselling entirely. But stuff like that does have a real effect. And there's more involved stuff that primary ticketsellers can do - I actually used to work in the industry but it's been years ago so I don't remember all the ins and outs. But bottom line, it is possible for ticket-sellers to have an effect on this stuff.

I think it wasn't just the four hours without any sign of movement, but the site going down. There's also the fact that given it was a pre-sale for registered fans, they had to know the numbers involved and did not seem set up for that. Plus, the reselling of $60 tickets for $700.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-22 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
The reselling prices are her fault, same as Blink 182. The artists can cap resell price and they chose not to which is why there are mid-tier seats on Stubhub for $45,000.

Who pays $45,000 for a concert ticket unless they're a literal billionaire? Does anyone actually buy them at that price?

I wonder the same thing!
