You're so close, but so far.

Honestly? They're both the best entries in two overall kinda awful trilogies.

I thought the big feud was between TFA and TLJ, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
People who like TLJ don't actually dislike TFA. They will make some criticisms of it, perhaps - and those criticisms are there to be made - but I don't think they fundamentally hate the movie.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it would be TLJ and TROS. Never heard TLJ compared with ROTS, honestly.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
There's no feud between TLJ and TROS either. Mostly everyone agrees that TROS is bad. To the extent that there's a feud over TROS, it's whether TROS was because of TLJ or despite TLJ.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed 100%

(Anonymous) 2022-11-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm only a fan of Episode 3. 4 and 5 were fun, but 3 is the only one that turns me inside-out.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-24 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
SA ugh, I mean Ep 4. (first in A New Hope). Where is my brain today?

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I have my own preference for which I like more, but they're both more good than bad, and both good conceptually with some degree of problems in execution

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of older fans have a better opinion of ROTS because the novelization, that came out before the movie did, had a lot of interesting lore. I don't think hardly anyone will argue with you if you think the storytelling in the OT was just more interesting and compelling, compared to both later trilogies, though.

Personally, I have a certain affection for the PT simply because of where it ends: long live Vader and Palpatine. :) That said, I hate the crap out of the "NOOO!" that they added in, later, simply on account of that being the only Star Wars movie that didn't have one. It was much better when Vader's despair and rage was silent.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
While I think TLJ is the better movie and I like it much more, I think they both had good parts.

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hear, hear! Sequel trilogy was shite. TFA had so much potential despite regurgitating ANH but once they stopped copying the OT they had nothing worth the production costs.

All of the ST films had weird obsessions, but TFA is the only one that faired well with its.
TFA was obsessed with nostalgia, which resulted in a rather bland and predictable movie. But despite this it did manage to set up a bunch of interesting new characters and their potential storylines.
TLJ was obsessed with being unpredictable, to the point of hurting it's own story just so audiences would be surprised. Add to this the near-complete disinterest in what TFA had set up and you get a whole mess with nonsensical story and character assassinations all around.
TROS was obsessed with pandering, again to the point of hurting it's own story. Plus the fact that it's solution to dealing with TLJ's mess was to mostly ignore or retcon it, leaving the overall story to become this weird soup.

And I love both, would say both are the best of their respective trilogies, and would put them both in my top 5 (ROTJ, R1, ESB, ROTS, TLJ).

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
ROTS was a mess, but the bones were good. TLJ was put together a lot better, but in the end it had no bones. Some people want a fixer upper and some people want a mantis shrimp. Luckily, Star Wars has something for everyone.

I'm curious to hear what you mean bc this is pretty much the opposite of what its defenders say, and is also not what its detractors generally say

Compared to RotS? Better acting, much better special effects, and written by someone who has actually heard living people talk, George. But - almost completely disregards TFA in both tone and characterization, almost completely ignored by ROS, and not a complete or satisfying enough story to work as a standalone. For all the potential it might have had, it could be completely cut out of the sequel trilogy and if you didn't know it was there then you wouldn't know you had missed anything.

I love them both.

OP here - it's supposed to be TROS not ROTS

(Anonymous) 2022-11-23 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry, there's a typo there. I put it in "secrets you don't want to make thread" late at night and never checked back on it. Probably shouldn't've used abbrevations.

You're illustrating perfectly why they should have chosen more variety of letters for the titles.

But yeah - I'd agree that they're both bad.

On the one hand, lol!

On the other - that’s almost more confusing. This place is more obsessed with the sequels than most of the fandom, and even we mostly line up with the three major schools of thought: Hate both movies, Love TLJ and hate ROS, and Yay, Reylo.

Outside of fs, most of fandom has either moved on to the TV shows or is just ignoring everything after Rogue One.

I've seen the "TROS is an enjoyable romp that managed to salvage what TLJ broke" take about as many times as the "TLJ is a masterpiece and TROS ruined it" one.

I mean I just always remember the RLM review of TROS where they basically said "OK yeah TROS is terrible, JJ made a hot steaming pile of garbage, but if you think about it it's actually all Rian Johnsons fault"

Lol it happens. I prefer Episode 3, and the prequel trilogy over the disney anti trilogy. Still agree with you that tfa, tlj and tros were terrible sw movies, so terrible that I don’t consider them canon to the original six films.
