Weird music you like

[personal profile] philstar22 2022-11-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some music do you like that you think others might find strange?

Inspired by my love of Twilight Force and Gloryhammer. Currently listening to both on Youtube.

Another one I like and been relisting to recently is Heather Dale. She's fun. Her Valdemar songs especially.

And even though I'm not into Harry Potter anymore, still love Wrock, especially Ministry of Magic and Catchlove.

Miracle of Sound makes great fan songs as well.

Heather Dale is great but afaik she never did any Valdemar songs. That'd be Heather Alexander (who is now Alexander James Adams after transitioning).

Woops, right, mixed the two up. Love both. Did not know he transitioned, though.

Vintage shopping and elevator music. Loved it even as a kid, never understood why it annoyed so many people.

Some of it I really like as well. Can be really relaxing when I just want to zone out.

the first one that comes to mind is an album by the Greek rock band Aphrodite's Child called 666. It's not the satanic metal album you would think from the title although it has some amazing guitar work on it that I think most metal fans would appreciate. I don't really want to say too much about it as I think a first time listener should be surprised by some aspects about it, but it does an interesting job of combining a LOT of different styles of music. I can hear influences on it from everybody from John Lennon to 70's funk.

I'm a huge Oingo Boingo fan; I think they were more of a thing in the States back then, I've yet to meet anyone here in the UK who has heard of them. They're my go-to for whenever a friend hands over control of the Spotify jukebox to me.

Hell, yeah, Oingo Boingo. It's cool to see someone outside the U.S. who's a fan, 'cause yeah, I do wonder how well they did internationally. Hell, even here in the States, most people, at least in my experience, know them either for "Weird Science" or "Dead Man's Party" and nothing else.

High-five! My dad is a connoisseur of old cult sci-fi films and when I played Weird Science to him he went "oh yeah I remember this." but he'd never heard anything else. But their catalogue is insane and so creative and so unlike anything I ever heard. I've long been hunting for decent quality merch but it seems to be slim pickings. :(

AYRT

Aw, that's cool :). Yeah, I think "Weird Science" has probably popped up in quite a few things, so it'd be very easy for even the most casual listener to hear that song. My dad actually helped get me into Oingo Boingo - he used to play their song "Goodbye, Goodbye" a lot around the house, and I also remember hearing "Weird Science" a lot as a kid 'cause it used to be on some cassette tape of '80s songs I Liked to listen to. Then somehow I wound up going down the rabbit hole and next thing you know, boom, fandom. And then when I found out that Danny Elfman was involved in so many TV shows and movies I liked as a kid as well, that just added to my interest :D.

But yeah, always great to meet other fans, and I'm so glad you've discovered them as you have. I sympathize on the merchandise issue, but hopefully you'll manage to find some cool stuff somewhere at some point :).

I was just listening to Oingo Boingo today! But I am in the States and grew up in the 80s so it's not so unusual for me. I even saw them live.

For myself I love Die Ärzte which is not unusual in Germany but it's hard to find anyone who's heard of them in the States. Also I dress very conservatively and I'm 55 years old so when I tell people I love a German rock band and went to Germany to see them and I have a tattoo they think it's pretty weird.

Lately I've been listening to country more and people I know would probably find it strange because I've always pretty much been into rock and not much else.

I'm a huge sucker for mashups to the point where I have favorite producers: Robin Skouteris and DJ Cummerbund. The former can be a bit hit or miss but has some amazingly lush songs (especially on The New Age). DJ Cummerbund is more consistently awesome, though.

Italo disco, late 70s/early 80s minimal wave/new wave/post punk especially if it's from Germany, Japanease city pop and artists/bands like YMO and Yasuaki Shimizu, French pop artists like Mylene Farmer, Lio etc. I like Jacques Brel as well.

-Vocaloid (some of the old school original, but mostly English covers tbh): I have a whole mp3 playlist full of English covers from various youtubers like JubyPhonic (like 'Bad Apple', 'Drop Pop Candy' and 'Wozwald') and Rachie (like 'The Disappearance of Hatsune Miku' and 'Goodbye Ms Flower Theif')

-Fan songs: being into online fandoms since 2005 means I have a few mp3 files that have accumilated over the years since then - starting with Yu-Gi-Oh! abridged parody songs like 'Leather Pants' and Elizabeth Smarts Supernatural songs like 'All For You' and 'Blue Bird'.
Then the 2010s kicked off with a fuckton of Five Nights at Freddy's and Undertale fan songs in addition to gamer mashup/remix songs like Markiplier 'Dooly Doo' and 'Where's Mama'. Now that I'm writing this I just remembered that I use to listen to a LOT of Pogo's remixes of movies/shows - especially liked the Lord of the Rings, TNG Star Trek and Snow White ones. The most recent was listening to someone's musical version of Who Killed Markiplier using a Vocaloid program.

-Nightcore cover of songs: definitely scratched an itch in my brain during the 2010s (especially for Kesha songs that would either sound best sped up like for 'We R Who We R' or her own acoustic versions for songs like 'Die Young').

-So much Jpop and Jrock music thanks to early 2000s weeb me lol. Utada Hikaru and Kokia are particular favorites in addition to Suga Shikao and recently discovering Queen Bee (been listening to the song 'Baishun' on a loop for a couple of days). But I probably leans more to the Rock/metal side with bands like X Japan, MUCC, Babymetal, Maximum the Hormone, The Gazette, Buck-Tick, Band-Maid and TK.
