As long as it's legible, colorblind-compatible, and doesn't involve weird text splitting around a picture? You're doing just fine.

And since they're anonymous secrets, it doesn't really matter. It's not like some Photoshop guru can go out and brag about what a pimp job they did on that "I want to write an Eye of Sauron/Ringwraiths smutfic*" secret.

*incredibly random example is incredibly random.

Yeah, I agree. Don't let the design snobs freak you out. Most people just want it to be legible and make some kind of sense. And plenty of us lack photoshop skills, so I'm sure yours don't stand out in any way.

Very few are great design jobs, it's all good. Just don't put really dark text on a dark image, light text on a light image or blurry text. Not everyone in fandom has the great vision necessary to deal with teeny tiny text, or lack of contrast.

[identity profile] saztak.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
haha some people start treating these secrets like an e-peen contest, saying 'well I make shiny secrets, so I'm a much cooler person in f!s'. It happens whenever people come together, that competitiveness comes through tenfold.

Don't let it get to you. I don't like reading shiny secrets. Something interesting is nice, like an interesting layout, or clear, but clever color choices or something. However, I scroll past a lot of secrets, but I tend to stop at the much simpler ones.

long story short, anyone that says that your secret looks ugly (I've had that happen to me too), are just being butthurt and finding reasons to hurt you. Or, at least, that's what I've seen mostly. 'You ship THAT? Okay, to each his own. But you could have done a better job with execution...' :D <3

[identity profile] authoressarktos.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww...don't worry OP, it's all good. Not all of us are a wiz at photoshop, and you shouldn't worry about it! As long as we can read it, everything's fine.

[identity profile] niqus.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
aw :c
I read all secrets, even those not-so-pretty (only if there's something about my fandom, or fandom I know...) because sometimes there are more interesting than pretty one's :]

(crappy english is crappy. sorry it's not my first language :P)

Your English is just fine.

Honestly, if you pick a decent picture and slap some text on with roflbot (http://wigflip.com/roflbot/no-watermark) you'd be ahead of the game. Sometimes there are secrets that are so illegible I just want to shake the people that posted them and ask them if they seriously expected people to be able to read that. This is f!s - there's really no need for a ~fancy font~ or blurry text.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, as long as the secret is legible and not unreasonably lengthy, I don't care. It's fandom secrets, not an art exhibit. Though I see you may have some issues in the unreasonably lengthy department.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll bet you anything that at least a quarter of these secrets are basic MSPaint. Nothing wrong with it.

[identity profile] sanae.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Hi. I did not skip this secret. :3

[identity profile] lacommunarde.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I shop my secrets, but actually all that entails is putting images together and text on the thing and is more because I took a class in photoshop before I found out how to use paint. For most secrets, there is no difference.

For the rest, there are some amazing ones, true, but there are also a lot of one that attempt to be amazing and are actually massive dosages of fail, being either completely illegible,
using oh-god-my-eyes bright colors where nobody wants to read the thing because everyone skims over it so fast,
are run-around-in-circles things that make everyone scream "I cannot turn my computer around to read the fucker,"
are using way too many effects to be legible to anyone including the op,
etc.
Provided you do not fall into one of those terrible categories, and try to keep the secret out of the realms of the terribly angsty and accusatory, your secrets will be read and welcomed.

[identity profile] her-lovelyheart.livejournal.com 2009-05-08 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I read your secret. =]

[identity profile] blueleopard87.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, even though I know how to use Photoshop, I always make my secrets in MS Paint because I'm lazy ;)

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I don't even own Photoshop. And if I did, I would totally fail at using it.

The only secrets I ever skip are ones that are difficult to read -and- I don't know the fandom. Usually I read all secrets, whether I know the fandom or not, -unless- they make the text practically illegible.

So, as long as you're making your secrets legible, I read 'em. =) That's at least one reader you have, right?

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I have to agree that legibility is key. The only reason I personally skip a secret is because the text is too small, fuzzy or otherwise unreadable, OR it goes into great detail about a canon I'm not familiar with.

("I can't believe people still like Character A after episode 12, especially with the resolution of the Whatsit Arc," etc., etc. for paragraphs. It's like people don't seem to realise that they'd get more responses if they could write it in such a way that EVERYONE - not just those in their fandom - could understand what the hell they're talking about.)

Your secret is nice and easy to read, and not totally incomprehensible. So you're doing fine. :)

[identity profile] ladililn.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
You just spoke my words. ;) I have little to no photoshop skills...and I also have those fears about people connecting my shitty-looking secrets together! But rest assured, at least, that I always read the plain looking secrets--I don't know about anyone else, but to me, at least, they're the ones I seek out. I just like them better for some reason.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-09 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty decent at photoshop myself, but I don't judge. As long as I'm actually able to read the secret, I will read it. I never skip "ugly" secrets, just the ones that would take me over ten minute to figure out what they're trying to say.

[identity profile] hiidenuhma.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda OT, but it bothers me a lot more when people nitpick or mock obvious spelling mistakes and typos in secrets. Like the comments in this thread indicate, folks are quite forgiving when it comes to the visual side of the secrets because not everyone is good at that, but you know what? Not everyone is good at spelling either. I guess that's why there have been so many apologies for "bad English" lately here in f!s...

(And yes, there is always spell check, but come on. It's not that serious.)

[identity profile] mickeyk.livejournal.com 2009-05-09 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon poster, I'd rather read a secret done up your way than, say, secret 101 in the same long post. Dark colour on white is easy to read, two similar colours or dark typing on a dark picture... so very hard to read. There have been secrets I've skipped over, simply because I can't make out the words.

So I hope you'll keep making secrets and submitting them when you want.
