Everyone who got nominated in both years' awards deserves a round of applause, and those who made it to the final voting are some of the finest writers anywhere. People like
I do agree that politics and popularity affect awards results - some folks from one particular site heavily promoting an author who originally posted to their site, without even checking the offerings from the other two major sites involved in the awards. However, it's also true that writers become popular by consistently posting fic that their audience wants to read.
To each his (or her) own, when it comes to fic.
*headdesk* Misspelled a name. Sheesh.

You may have a point. *shrug* I might simply have no taste at all in writing. But considering that my personal home library has well over 2,000 books, and my library card generally has 20 to 30 more checked out at any given time, I think I've read enough to make an informed statement. Perhaps you're reading more highbrow literary fiction, but I'm talking about popular fiction, and that's a more fair comparison to fanfic.
Fanfic is for entertainment, just like popular fiction. And I've read enough of that to say that there's a great deal of it which is simply good - and that's all it has to be. It's meant to be fun to read, not deathless prose. The three fanfic authors I mentioned accomplish that quite well. Do I think their work will be taught in freshman Lit Comp ten years from now? Hell no. But I do think that as long as fandom is around and these people are publishing, their work will be read and enjoyed.
If you have a civil, thoughtful response to this, by all means post it. I'm one of those "I may disagree with what you say, but I'll fight to the death for your right to say it" people, you see. But if the only remarks you can make are vitriolic attempts to start wank over some of the most frequently-read (and popular - they're popular for a REASON, and it's consistent quality) authors in the fandom, then you're out of luck.

(Anonymous) 2009-05-11 10:44 am (UTC)(link)Just because you can write something that is grammatically correct and has an identifiable beginning, middle, and end does not make for "good" writing. It makes for mediocre writing. And writing that doesn't push itself on some level - even if it's just to see if it can make a well-worn plot feel new and fresh again - can no way be considered good or even serviceable. It's just boring and cliched.

Perhaps we have a difference of definition. I call it good writing if it accomplishes its purpose - and in most fanfiction, that purpose is simply entertainment. Sometimes people want to read something familiar - perhaps even cliched. If its written engagingly, they will enjoy it. You're clearly not one of those people - for you to enjoy something, it has to be more than just 'good'. That's your particular sense of taste, and you're welcome to it.
I think the authors I mentioned are trying to push themselves in writing fanfic - I know I am. It isn't easy, especially when you're working in our fandom, where the canon has been around for 70 years. Fanfic as a category allows a writer to be a little more experimental sometimes. And other times, people write fanfic just because they enjoy telling a story. And lots of other folks enjoy reading those stories. If they're boring and cliched to you, then I'm sorry, but no one forced you to keep reading. Write something of your own, or encourage your favorite authors. Most authors (published or fanfic) enjoy sincere letters of appreciation from fans.
But the vast majority of writing, published or fanfic, is going to fall into your category of 'mediocre'. That's the nature of the beast - there's a bell curve of writing, with a few greats, a few horrible examples, and a lot of stuff in the middle. Some of the middle stuff is better than others.
*I might have more to say on this, but I've gotta leave for work.
