firstly, this will probably be a tldr response, but here goes.

Firstly, she obviously has a very strong personality and very definite persona. And that sort of thing is always going to divide people, it just is.

Secondly... I feel like maybe some of the reasons that I dislike her are shallow. I'm not talking about the poster of the secret, lord knows what their opinions might be. I don't know, I used to love Dresden Dolls and now I can't stand them - and Amanda in particular - and it really bothers me because I don't want to be THAT GIRL who only likes a band's old stuff and thinks they've, like, totally gone downhill, but that's who I am.

Lately I can't stand a person I used to admire like crazy, but I can't figure out why. I know that I really strongly dislike a lot of the stuff she's wearing lately, but I know that's not the sole reason. I just don't know what the main reason is...

Um, so yeah. Due to my complete lack of knowledge of PJ Harvey, I can't really argue with you on that point and so my response is pretty lamey mclamester, but I guess what I'm trying to say is that someone with a character as big as this person is bound to rub some people the wrong way? It's not necessarily that haters feel she's untalented or judging her by her looks, it's just a clash, a feeling that it's tiring and annoying to pay attention to her.

That's how I feel anyway and I wish I bloody didn't. UGH.

well at least you're honest in explaining that you can't really pinpoint why you dislike her, and aren't really taking some obnoxious defensive soapboxy route in that explanation, so i certainly can't fault you for that. as an amanda fan for 6+ years and counting, i've seen her take pretty much a complete 180 as far as image, identity, and musical evolution and it suits some people just fine. others think that she comes off as a pretentious self-important bitch, which don't get me wrong, i've even thought myself on occasion. i noticed in her solo endeavors she's really lost a lot of the older, more fairweather dolls fans who liked the band because it was cute and conceptual because it's so hard sometimes to figure out what the hell she's even trying to SAY and yet she defends her art to hell and back while it leaves a lot of people simply confused. i guess to me it is a little shady that i've seen a lot of people comment more on her appearance/style than her musical direction. she's not infallible to me by a long shot, and i can understand mild to moderate dislike. i guess all out HATE, calling her a "thing", and actually losing respect for other artists because of their association with her as the OP was stating really burned me, that was the main thing.

AHAHA oh man you know so much more than me about this situation. Like, I have no idea how she acts in interviews, to be honest. And I don't know about the sort of haters she gets, but it's so lame for people to judge like that based on looks. Especially when they wouldn't judge male artists by the same standards. Although pointing out that the way that some people judge women is different from the way they judge men is so... DUH OBVIOUS. It's nice to have figures out there standing up for the idea of women being judged by something other than their looks - even if I don't especially like those people.

I guess I personally come under the file of "fairweather dolls fans". Uh, that description is pretty much me.

Oh man, it is too late for me to process my thoughts properly.

(incidentally, I rarely use the internet to talk to people who I don't already know, so yeah, I feel pretty great about not having incited an arguent over this matter WHOO YEAH)
