I don't think it's the only measure for how society is doing, but "what kind of movies do people in society want to see" is an interesting question that does reflect on where peoples' heads are at and what they want

I don't have a problem with that. But a statement such as "What sort of society have we become!" in response to how box office films are doing is just stupid and judgy. Let people watch what they want and save the outrage for far worse things than cartoony, giggling creatures.
