Older as in OG era fan? Every sequel so far has been... subpar. It's hard to make amazing sequels anyway, but every sequel keeps "correcting" info that didn't need correcting, pisses me off that sometimes they notice the inconsistency but choose to not stick to the OG deliberately. As someone who loved the OG it's... ehh. Besides, none has been nearly as iconic (in terms of ratings and value as a groundbreaking piece of media generally) as OG so far, which is to be expected, but they'll keep milking the cow anyways. The usual, but I fear it may become another "I only love the original rendition" franchise for me.

Yep, OG era fan. I’ve been a fan of Final Fantasy since the first game came out. But FFVII is far and away my favorite. I’m pretty weak for FFX too, but not as much as VII. And yeah, the sequels were really disappointing. I liked Crisis Core, but I didn’t love it. I do still like the remake a lot, but I understand that not every OG fan does. And I understand why completely.

I'm sorry you have to stick to something so ridiculous and unfun because the mere concept of the game is entirely ridiculous and funny but y'all OGtrash take it waaaaay too seriously. I say this as someone who got into Final Fantasy through VII. Have y'all actually played it recently?

NAYRT

But I am still the anon they were responding to. I have played the game recently, I play the original every year. It is both silly and serious, dated and timeless. And it’s because I love the original that I love the remake. It was everything I wanted and more. And I can’t wait for the second part. To me, it captures both the seriousness of the plot, and the ridiculousness of the wacky and goofy moments. It brings Cloud back to his old self, who’s cool but a huge dork under the trauma and emotional repression. I had missed that. I respected his portrayal in the Compilation and AC, but I’d love him no matter what anyways. In AC at least, his demeanor is completely understandable.

Not every fan of the original shares my feelings on the remake, and that’s okay too. So there’s no reason to be so rude to AYRT.

Nah, don't get me wrong, I am thoroughly enjoying Remake for what it did right - even if it personally feels very "every-FF-post-XII" at times and kinda bland in that sense. But this "time travel" as I did my research took me back to every time I got a spin-off and went "well... nope" which is why I thought I would enjoy Remake better if I didn't get involved in fandom. Too many POVs after all. But even to me it's an OK game on its own.

Ah, gotcha. And I definitely get enjoying the remake more without being part of the fandom. I feel that way about the original game too, the fandom is just too toxic on all sides for it to be fun a lot of the time.

Lol unfortunately it feels dated to me mechanics-wise. But what can I say, I loved the RPGs of that era (late 90s). Squaresoft in particular put out so many gems. They had shine. But I haven't really felt that shine in a JRPG in a while, and I say this as someone who's loved JRPGs for ages. For Square I think their stories went downhill after the merge and it's not a coincidence since a lot of talented minds quit then. After that other companies caught my interest but now... "haven't felt" doesn't mean "there are no good JRPGs anymore!" just means I didn't get lucky with the ones I tried.

FFVIIR's mechanics are "fun" but I wouldn't call them "amazing" and would rather have had Remake be a remaster with updated mechanics (like Reunion?) rather than sequel.
