Re: Secrets you don't want to make...

NAYRT

I completely disagree. I just want to have fun cosplaying, even though me learning to sew has been disastrous enough that I learned I can’t do it. Because I have chronic pain from injuring my arms in an accident. I can’t use them for anything complex for more than an hour before I’m almost about to collapse from the pain. So what if I buy ready made costumes? It doesn’t mean I’m not cosplaying. There’s no rule except in competitions that it has to be hand made. After seeing AYRT talk about why OP is being overly judgmental about cosplayers, it was disappointing to see them and you be judgmental in a different way. Gatekeeping the cosplay community isn’t a great practice. I still have a great time picking out the accessories and shoes to match the costume. And putting on makeup, both when I’m cosplaying a character that wears it, and sometimes when I just want to get experimental. I’m still cosplaying. I don’t judge anyone else’s cosplay, it doesn’t matter how close to the characters they are. Or by if it looks like it was done by a seasoned sewer or someone who just “hobbled something together”. Because I think cosplay is cool no matter what. So again, why should it matter if mine, or other’s, costumes are bought ready made? Sometimes my friend makes the costumes for me, because he is able to sew, unlike me. Would I still be judged for not making it myself, or is it being hand stitched and not bought all it takes to not experience gatekeeping? I still love these characters, and I’m not any less of a fan or cosplayer for not being able to make my own costumes.
