Gender identity is very much a growing topical issue in Japan, as well as Western countries and the people in them beyond terminally online American teenagers. Thinking it's only something a small "cringe" group cares about makes you sound embarrassingly out of touch at best or right wing at worst.

Do you mean only small groups care in the way that would find Ranma 1/2 offensive, or care about sensitivity towards gender identity in a general sense? You're only right if you mean the former.
