Fans of a medium that's largely low-budget and extremely pandery? Having low standards???

(Anonymous) 2022-12-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, not a fan of either, but taking into account that a lot moved from "Chinese indie BL fiction (often of the 'shitty isekai' variety) fandom" I would say their standards have gotten better in the past few years.

BL isn't exactly known sweeping sagas and literary masterpieces. One comes and stays for dick, not plot. Excuse the pun.

SA
Please excuse the cute and on point accidental omission of the word 'for' in a comment regarding literary masterpieces.

Yes but honestly, the BL masterpieces I have been lucky enough to read in my life hit me like a truck. Maybe it's the "HE JUST LIKE ME FR ;_;" factor but great BL plots are my favorite kinds of plot.

Wish we'd normalize recommendations of "wholesome (even if not necessarily hot) BL" . It's hard to find such recommendations, and when I do... it's often from a moralizing POV? They're recommended in a "this seems to be Good Representation tm as attested by me, The (het) judge of BL manga" way, not in a "this made me cry a bucket and think about life deeply" way.

DA

I'd love to have more recs for explicit!fic with solid characterization and plotting. Recs for well written BL shows would be good, too.

Eh. Genre works are often like that. So long as they get the main ingredients of the genre, there's a guaranteed audience.

Which means, sometimes you get production teams half-assing everything because they know that audience will come anyway. And sometimes you get production teams throwing their hearts into poignant, epic examinations of the human condition because they love what they do... and the audience will come.

It works the same for things like potboiler thrillers, het romance novels, cookbooks...

+1

I was gonna say BL isn't the only genre that has this happen, it's a common thing in any subsection of media that relies on a particular brand of tropes for it's audience. Some of them are very good, but there are a lot that are just bad and hollow because the people making them are after a quick buck, not for the genuine love of the genre.

That's the way all genres work. 95% is hot garbage. Sci-fi, romance, action - full of shitty tv/movies/books. You gotta wade through to find the 5%.

What makes it worse is watching really good series like (IMHO) Bad Buddy and Not Me and knowing that it's going to be harder to find anything that tops them.

Bad Buddy is legit the only Thai BL I've been recommended that I thought was good. It's disappointing because I really want to like more.

Haven't seen Not Me yet. Thanks for the inadvertent rec, nonny.
