this!!! i read it back before it was known she was trans and as someone heavy in the gamer sphere it read to me entirely like a dudebro mocking transpeople. she tried something! and if there was a different immediate framing of "this is a trans person reclaiming/deconstructing the slur" at the start people would've adored it because it WAS well written, but, well. being coy about who the author was from the start just didn't help with the people exposed to the attack helicopter thing for years on end.

even in that context, the reaction was still wildly over the top and absolutely unacceptable.

like, for people to immediately have a reaction of "huh, i'm not sure what's going on there" - OK. it's admittedly a provocative title.

but you don't have to then immediately jump on Twitter and lead a witch hunt without seeking any further information or reading the story. but people did! and that's the whole problem!

Yep. Including established authors who themselves have marginalised identities. It was disgusting.

So much this.

The witch hunt did much more real harm to a real trans person than any bad story possibly could. The problem is people who jump onto the callout bandwagon without the least bit of critical thinking, or even reading the damn story, because they get to feel like they're doing a good thing while basically indulging a sadistic desire to destroy someone. If they're told the target is acceptable, they don't hold back.

There are several people I used to look up to who turned my respect to contempt real quick with that kind of behavior.

For real. And if this happened once, or twice, I might think "okay ... they made a terrible mistake," but it keeps happening and the people doing it go around brazenly arguing that it's your fault if they couldn't automatically TELL you weren't the enemy. Which tells me right quick that their primary purpose here is not what they're saying it is, because there's nothing "just" about acting that way.

I get the initial impression, but once it was known this was written by a trans woman who was intentionally making confrontational work - which is a HUGE part of the queer SFF tradition - the right thing to do would be to say, "oh shit, I didn't realize, my bad," and back off.

You cannot be a reliable activist or ally if you have no sense of when to admit you were wrong and apologize.

All of this. And also, it would be nice if that went with more of an effort to reign in their impulse to bite first and ask questions never. They make aggressive asses of themselves so often and seem mortally afraid of apologizing.
