I am all in favor of big budget pirate shows!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-17 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that is bait.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-17 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, why?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-17 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The Barbary Pirate Wars were over Africans taking Europeans, especially those from the UK in the earliest phases, to use as slaves.

Why is that bait? It happened but it doesn't fit with today's sensibilities so we - have to pretend it didn't?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Not exactly - some were taken as slaves but it was much more common to just straight-up pirate the ships and take prisoners for ransom. The Barbary Coast was North African Muslims, not the sub-Saharan Africans who the US was enslaving at the time. And the US-Morocco treaty was super interesting, along with the UK and US using the Barbary pirates against one another during the 1812 war. The other battle mentioned is historically important because it was the start of the British as a naval power, involving raids from Spain.

DA

All of this.

Also, can attest about the US treaty with Morocco being super-interesting.

You don't think that it's even remotely possible that someone might find this historical era with pirates and ships fascinating? That it MUST be troll bait because pirates are so boring that nobody would ever care about them otherwise?

I don't know much about the time period but this sounds like a fun idea. Except I don't trust Netflix to get history right. But it's not impossible.

I don't trust Netflix to not cancel it after two seasons, lol.
