For so many years, fans have been begging JKR to just shut up about the Potter world. I was thinking the other day... they've finally gotten their wish. She doesn't tweet about it anymore, Pottermore seems mostly defunct, and I doubt the Fantastic Beasts project or (or any other side projects not in progress) will proceed. I can't tell if WB wanted her strategically absent from the 20-year reunion or if she didn't want any part of it. She seems as disconnected from that universe now as those who have disconnected from it out of pain over her comments.

I'm not trans, but I'm part of the LGBT community, and I consider myself a trans ally. But I also see JKR's position as based in trauma. It seems both sides are based in trauma. And then I think there are a lot of people who always wanted JKR to shut up and have used her transphobia as a convenient excuse to dogpile her into silence at last while earning some progressive street cred. Of course, JKR is still in the position of power here because all profits from the universe still go to her, even if she emotionally and professionally disconnects. So I understand why people would encourage boycotts.

Anyway, the ugliness of the whole thing has finally managed to kill my Potter love as well. I don't read or write Potter fic anymore or associate with anyone active in the fandom. My books have finally been stuffed into the back of a closet. This is the first year that I'm not enjoying my Christmas holidays by rewatching the films. The whole Potter world just makes me feel sad and empty now. So I guess I know how you feel, even if not for the same reason.

Absolutely her position is based in trauma. But having trauma doesn't give you license to go around hurting other people, and it's insulting to other survivors of family violence to say so. I think it's really sad that transphobes jumped on her initial disclosure to lead her down the TERF path rather than pointing out the obvious fact that trans people are not your enemy, misogyny and patriarchy are.

NA

Wait, what's the trauma?

JKR is a domestic violence and sexual assault survivor. She's disclosed this and I believe it.

What I don't understand is the pipeline that led her from that to fullscale terf-dom. Maybe getting hatebombed on Twitter after the initial tweets broke her brain or something and now we're several layers of doubling down later. I'm at the point where I want to disown HP too, but unlike OP, I'm perfectly fine with that. So long and thanks for all the good fanfic.

This. And at this point she's gone way past what trauma would explain. Also, plenty of trans people have trauma from the transphobia they have to deal with daily.

This, honestly.

Her position may initially have been based in trauma (and subsequently mis-directed at a group that did not even tangentially have anything to DO with that trauma), but her position now involves actively supporting hate groups. As another memory of the queer community, I can have sympathy for the person who was hurt and scared in the past, but none at all for the actions she's taken since, repeatedly and unapologetically.

She wrote the Fantastic Beasts franchise into disaster herself. Most people agree those films are mid to borderline unwatchable even if they have no knowledge of JKR's online beefs.

Borderline?
