people do fandom things on facebook?

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It had a healthy roleplay fandom from 2009~2015 that limps along to this day. Don't ask how I know, I definitely don't have firsthand experience with it

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That only withered away because Facebook enforced its anti-fake-profiles policy.

Nah. I had a fake name on FB for years. It just sounded real.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, being called Wildcats Shirt probably didn't help my RPing.

*snickers*

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Why would anyone do this????

Well, there is an AO3 page (or more) on FB, that's mostly people asking questions about writing, talking about how to tag and such, and posting snippets of work.

It's...fine? It's just another group that is nonsensical and uninteresting if you're not actually a part of fandom.

I’m in that group. (The main one - there are more than one.) It’s just as you describe. Obviously it would sound uncomfortable to people who do not ever want their real name associated with their fanfiction. And I totally get why people don’t. But some people just don’t mind. (It’s a private group but I don’t trust that to provide any protection and I hope other people don’t either.)

Are you? Cool cool. I'm in one of them, dunno which, heh. I don't usually post any of my work or link it, but I do reply to people when asking about writing or research stuff. Sometimes it's a little tedious, with people posting endless pictures of their latest kudo count or whatever, but - whatever. Makes 'em happy, it's fine.

Sounds like the same one I'm in. I don't usually post my work but I tend to write for niche fandoms people there aren't usually interested in. I've never posted a kudo count but I did post one particularly impressive review once. I couldn't resist.

What are fandom things to you anyway? As in "here, check this great porn"? I probably wouldn't do that. But I used to do a lot of "fandom things" on Facebook like buying or selling fandom merch and even discussing games or shows. It's not my biggest regret ... ?
It's like finding someone you know at a con: if you know, you know, and shouldn't mock others for it or else the joke is on you. If you don't, then you don't, and it's fine.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Like someone else said, it depends on the type of fandom thing. I'm in a group or two that trades/sells fandom merch. I follow a few local cons' pages. But anything that's more into fanfic or shipping, or even just really in-depth debates,... FB is for real life people, and (for example) my coworkers can know I'm a SW fan, but not the latest fic I read.

I actually only got a Facebook many years ago for cosplay networking, hahah. Just then my family found me. This was all fine, they know I cosplay. Apparently my brother was showing off my cosplays to people at work because he thought they were cool. (We're in IT, so nerd is baked in.)

Then 12 years ago I applied for a job at the same place and at the interview they were like "So we've seen some interesting pictures on your Facebook!" And I'm like "Hey, at least they're not pics like *mimes chugging a drink*" They laughed, I got the job, some of my coworkers followed me for costumes and/or bunnies.

Sometimes I'll post innocuous fan art there too. But oh man I am not letting them know the handle I write fanfic under. If I discuss that at all it's in very vague terms with no usernames or titles mentioned and locked to only certain people who I met through fandom.

I can totally see where you’re coming from! I’m in a couple fan groups but my activity there is very different than my fan activity anywhere else, even in the same fandoms.
I do like the book fandom groups there though. They skew older so it isn’t about fic and shipping, it tends to lean more towards meta. I’m sure plenty of the people are shippers just like me but none of us bring that stuff up, it’s just news and discussing the books.

I do all my fandom stuff on tumblr. It’s a nice way to partition fandom from real life. Anyway, one of my irl Uni friends on Facebook is a BTS Stan, she pretty much only fan girls on Facebook, so I’ll be going through my timeline on there, and it’ll be stuff about my hometown, my sister’s cat mom/witchy/geek girl stuff, then a gif of Suga making a generic and the caption “if you know, you know” with seven thousand of then hot emojis people in my fandom use to express horniness.

I have all these posts about Judaism, depression, and politics, interspersed with a few squeeing over German punk musicians and crying over Kdramas. The vast majority of my followers have no clue what I’m talking about with the last two but they just sort of do the internet equivalent of patting me on the head and saying “yes dear, we know.”

I have a fake name on there because I hate the idea of someone just finding me on social media without asking (ok so I'm probably online somewhere any ways, but the idea of it getting sprung on me at something like a job interview is like somebody outside of internet culture reading off a list to me about every smutty fic I have ever read or written).

I wouldn't say I'm 'fully' into fandom on there - but I'm apart of some music fan groups (as well as following bands/singers like Evanescence and Florence Welch on there), a Disney fan group and some goth/lgbtq groups that share media and memes on there. FB is the only social where I follow people I know irl so the fandom activities on there are tame compared to places like here and Tumblr.

Honestly, not only because of the name enforcing policies but also because to me Facebook is such an admittedly normie/real life kind of space. Most I've done in all these years is lurking in some panfandom groups but I'm terrified of leaving a comment anywhere fannish and that popping up on my mom's feed or something like that, so it's still a big no thanks.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-19 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in some fan groups on Facebook but I NEVER link my fic there. I don't want it attached to my real name, even in private groups.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-19 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I accidentally linked my smutty smut smut smut onto Facebook through tumblr after I used the cross platform post feature to post a holiday greeting on tumblr to Facebook as well for the family.

I really hope none of my family saw it/read it.
