I don't know what reason there is for MLMs even being legal. I wish some political party would just crack down on all of the MLMs, the grifters, the petty conmen, the telemarketers and spammers and scam messengers, all of it.

I think it's something that needs a nonpartisan effort to combat, to be honest (at least from my obversation of the anti-MLM movement).

I suspect that a lot could be done just by aggressively enforcing existing laws. I have to think that a high number of these MLMs are doing something or other that's illegal somewhere along the line.

Probably not paying a minimum wage for work or requiring an investment without supplying an actual franchise.

I’d like to see unpaid intern “jobs” be ruled illegal, too, because fuck that and the privileged assholes who work for free.

unpaid intern jobs, for no school credit, are illegal, and even when they're for school, you can't be doing work a paid person should be doing.

it's just that that's irrelevant to the job cultures which have grown up around psuedo-apprenticeships because everyone was rich, because if you sue, you'll never get a job in the that industry...and companies wouldn't even need to collude to prevent you from working.

Right - actual robust labor protections in this country would do a lot to improve things I would imagine

if people aren't using the labor protections they have...probably not. you'd need other protections, aka social safety nets.

Can't tell you about any other country, in the US but MLMs exist on a level of pyramid to "I have money and nothing else to do." where the pyramid is illegal. Most MLMs have quieted down their most ponzi-ish tactics for that reason. As long as most of the money comes from product sales, the government isn't going to do anything about Glengarry Glen Ross abuse, because this country believes fundamentally in your right to be a fool. A lot of our financial system was founded on it.
