Re: From yesterday's general comments...

I didn't see yesterday's thread until today and didn't comment there, but as someone who was raised by hippie parents who believed more in overdosing on supplements and using essential oils than in, say, vaccines... I'm so fucking lucky I'm not dead.

The worst I was ever given internally was tea-tree/melaleuca oil, and that shit will absolutely melt through plastic and also your innards.

Also they got all our drinking water from a horse trough out in the woods labeled "non-potable not for human use" for a decade or so, because the municipal water supply had *gasp* chemicals in it. Dihydrogen monoxide, oh no!

No fluoridated water or toothpaste meant more cavities for kid me than I've had since I could buy my own toothpaste.

I still use a couple herbal remedy type things as an adult—mostly peppermint oil for headaches, and I'm even an idiot and put it on my skin.

But even my "so far left they were halfway to meeting rightwing doomsday preppers from the other side" parents weren't doing some of the shit people pushing alternative medicines do now.

I've had so many right wing coworkers over the years mention buying shit for internal use that should rightfully have the poison control hotline on the bottle.

At least I had a couple of my mom's old herbals from the '60s that described the effects of various plants with a key that ranked stuff by how toxic it was and included little skull and crossbone warnings for stuff that was extra nasty.

These days when I come across books on alternative medicine/essential oils I check the index and if wintergreen and tansy and pennyroyal are mentioned as anything other than NOPE NOPE FUCK NO I assume the author was malicious, an idiot, or both.

I like tea tree oil, but I wouldn't put it anywhere near my person undiluted in some way, much less inside my person.

And holy shit to that other stuff.

Yeah, there's a huge difference between using a little peppermint oil for a headache or a little lavender oil to calm you down and relax you and using that sort of thing as a replacement for actual medical treatment. One is fine, the other is very much not.

Actual question. If you needed to relax and considered taking a benzo but lavender oil worked just fine and now you don't need to relax anymore is that a "replacement" as you see things?

nayrt, but are you talking about the placebo effect or just "toughing it out"? I'm not sure what you're asking here.

I honestly don't think there's enough information here to say definitively. Another anon cited the placebo effect, and I do think that's a possibility. However, going straight from benzos to lavender oil is a pretty sizable jump. It sounds like something else was also changed (such as adding more movement to your daily routine) to allow for such a difference to have any effect.

Yeah it sounds like ayrt is being WAY over-medicated because benzos for anything other than severe, crippling anxiety? Y I K E S. I've been prescribed Xanax exactly twice in my life and I had to jump through hoops in order to get it and in both cases it was EXTREMELY strictly metered and monitored by the doctors who prescribed it.

Hippie parents anon here and yeah, I wouldn't take benzos if a nice cup of tea would do, or at all if I could avoid it, but also the only people I know who were ever prescribed them, it was for getting through withdrawal, or, in one case, a former classmate who had regular weeks-long migraines back before current meds were developed.

I had to fill a prescription for a relative once and I think robbing fort Knox would be easier. Any doctor who would just prescribe them like nbd for someone who responded to the equivalent of mild herbal tea might well be risking their license.

Uhh, sorry about your experiences. (Also I am laughing at the "dihydrogen monoxide, oh no!" here.)
