I just watched "The Amazing Maurice" and... it was okay. I really think that people should stop trying to adapt Terry Pratchett works for the screen. His books are just too meta to translate to a visual medium; either the movie keeps having to draw attention to it being a movie in a way the books didn't have to worry about, or they remove the meta and that takes the power out of the story and it loses the heart of Pratchett's writing. I think his work is just unfilmable.

Yeah, I've never really really loved any of the film adaptations of his work, but I still need to see Amazing Maurice because the only one I refuse to watch is the Watch-in-name-only series.

I always end up feeling like the adaptations are too... twee? Whimsical? Cutesy? Idk.

Like, the books are funny, but the characters aren't exactly having tons of fun, and I feel like striking that balance without having a narrator or something is really hard, and having a narrator is almost always gonna pull the whole thing towards whimsy anyway.
