Elon Musk did the impossible: he trumped Trump for being the Internet's #1 loser.

Imagine going back in time to when Dave Chappelle was actually funny and telling him that he'd be getting booed for bringing fucking right-wing billionaire media tycoons on at his comedy shows.

Truly hard to comprehend how much worse he's gotten. What a sellout. I never expected anything from Elon so I can't be disappointed in him, but what a downfall for Chappelle.

Right? I thought he was funny at the time, but not a comedy god. It's hard to believe anyone could coast so long on their own reputation given his numerous screw ups.

I mean TBH I did think he was a comedy god at the time. Both his standup sets and the sketch show were amazing. And then just leaving at the peak of his power and fame and vanishing into nothingness - that's a very effective way to turn yourself into a legend and build a bulletproof reputation.

But, it's been years and years since he came back, and he's long since squandered all of that reputation and goodwill.

It was glorious to watch Elon Musk's pouty face.

Yes, they both deserved it.

Barely anyone gave a shit when he was anti Semitic except for Jewish people. Now it's Elon Musk and everyone goes insane.
Called it from jump.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Er... lots of people were upset about Chapelle's anti-Semitic comments. Jon Stewart's appeal for open discussion made headline news in reference to them. If you mean on FS, there were at least two secrets on the subject within the past couple of weeks.

What is it about being wealthy that gives people brain worms? Musk has always been wealthy from his father's emerald mine so he's always had the brain worms but I know Chappelle wasn't always like this. wtf happened?

Wealth changes most people, even if they don't mean for it to do so. I'd guess it's a lot of factors... not having to give a fuck about anyone or anything, no need to be diplomatic when you've got "fuck you money", suddenly having a lot of money means your priorities and goals change, you're suddenly part of a greater institution that's always ruthlessly defended itself at the expense of people who don't have wealth, any pressure you get from non-wealthy friends to give them money suddenly makes you a lot more cynical and isolated and more inclined to stick to hanging out with other rich people, etc. etc.

And Chapelle smokes a ton of weed, which probably doesn't help his reasoning skills.

no need to be diplomatic when you've got "fuck you money"

Yeah, this is the part that I find weird, because I'd understand that, but instead people like Chapelle were generally much less diplomatic and much more truth-to-power and angry when they *didn't* have money. Now they're just kind of...weaksauce.

Yeah, that's a good point. I think... pardon me if this is a stretch, but did you ever hear that saying about how rock n' roll was for angry young men? Not rich old men. It's one of the reasons why all the rebellious rock bands did their most iconic work when they were young, and not yet rich and famous. When you're filthy rich, famous and can have just about everything you want, it's maybe a bit harder to write sincere anthems about rebellion and sticking it to the man.

I think that's one of the things wealth does to you, and that maybe comedy comes from a similar place. When Dave wasn't rich, famous and venerated by huge audiences and his peers, he could be undiplomatic about some issues. It won him fame, because he did it in a way that made people laugh. He was an outsider. But when you're famous and everyone loves you and you're a millionaire, it's... kinda hard to maintain that outsider status. The energy that went into rebellion slowly morphs into just looking and sounding like an entitled asshole who doesn't understand he's punching down.

Shower thoughts, really.

Oh yeah, like religion is for the desperate, and the rich use it to abuse people.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Both of you have made very good points!

(Anonymous) 2022-12-27 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
These are great points...but I guess I don't understand how being rich makes you lose the critical skills to see you're punching down. Maybe it's the weed like nonny up above mentioned.

If he had a shred of decency he'd be apologizing for backing Kanye now that he's gone full face-mask level bigot.

And that's just my full opinion on that.
