NS, NF, etc.

For the first NF: What a ridiculously baseless thing to be convinced about.

NF1: Boy. I'm basically sympathetic to AI art but this just seems like a huge stretch.

NF2: Boy. I'm basically sympathetic to people trying to use new media programs to spread progressive messages but this just seems like a huge stretch.

Two big stretches in the NF section today.

NF2: lol, tik tok doesn't do politics like that OP. there's as much right-wing stuff as left-wing. trust me when I say being anti-china is enough for those politicians who are trying to ban it.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
NF2 - renewed efforts to ban it. It’s just the opposite party in the White House this time. TikTok supplying PII to CCP isn’t new news, it’s just finally confirmed that this wasn’t another one of Trump’s dementia fixations.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
My understanding of the situation is that (1) what Trump was trying to do was force the company that owns Tiktok to spin off a new version of the app that would be owned by a company in the US instead of by ByteDance and (2) that what they're doing currently is exclusively about banning Tiktok from government phones

So neither side of the aisle is really trying to outright stop Tiktok from existing in the US. The Trump attempt at a ban was probably about economic nationalism as much as privacy and data; the current attempts at limited bans are all about privacy.

Is that not accurate? Is there something else going on I'm not aware of?

NF2: It's totally the China thing, though. The government sort of cares if it's a US-based company (like Facebook), but just, like, maybe only to the level of shaming or fining them. TikTok being Chinese based is the reason for the push on banning.

Using people's information for US-capitalistic purposes is generally accepted - up to a point, then you might testify in front of Congress. But using it for something to benefit communist countries is quite literally a red flag to politicians.

NF2: Isn’t it just being banned from gov’t devices? I’m frankly surprised it (or any social media app) was ever allowed on government devices that presumably have access to government networks.

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
NF2: National security is important you know. China provided some computer infrastructure to the African Union and they then discovered it was sending mass packets of data to China in the middle of the night, every night.

There's legitimate reasons to want to ban TikTok.

NF1: given that AI generated images can't be copyrighted anymore, i don't know where all this mythical money for supporting it is going to come from

(Anonymous) 2022-12-24 06:56 am (UTC)(link)
There's a lot of money to be made by fleecing people who think there's lots of money to be made from AI art, though.

DA

But that’s very true lol
