I do not speak Chinese and don't know if using Mei in protest ever took of in Hong Kong in any major way, but at least on the western side of things using her to show support for the protesters seemed performative and kind of backwards in motivation to me. All I ever saw people talk about was "let's make Mei a symbol of the Hong Kong protests, China will ban her and Blizzard will get what they deserve". Actually showing support to Hong Kong felt like an afterthought, if that.
