You don't have to write out long detailed warnings, you know. Simple cw:death serves perfectly well to obscure whether it's about main, side or extra character while allowing the reader to mentally prepare without forcing them to go through unnecessary hoops.

It does matter to some people whether the death is a character they actually care about, a random OC, or a rabbit. Other people don’t want to read about death at all. You don’t have to read any story that makes you go through the indignity of spending two seconds to go to the bottom of the page and read the detailed warning, but quit pretending that there’s no reason to format it that way. You have a preference. It is your preference. If the person whose story you’re reading for free has a different preference either deal with it or read something else for free. If you’re commissioning the fic, you can demand they jump through whatever stylistic hoops make you happy.
